So since the Common App allows 2 changes after submission, which means I can have three possible versions of the main essay. Theoretically, I can write three different versions of my main essay and I will be able to choose which school I want to submit them to, right? I wonder if anyone has done this before and how exactly it works. I'm just worried if anything goes wrong and I won't be able to change it. Thanks!

Also I'm writing my transfer essay, so that's why I wish to tailor the main essay more to the schools I apply to though some of them ask for why essays.

Once you submit to the first school, your essay will be locked. You can submit that first version as many times as you want, but if you want to change it, you will need to unlock it. Once it is unlocked, you can revise and go in and out of it as many times as you want until you submit it again. Then it will be locked again and you can submit that second version to as many schools as you like. You can unlock and revise a second time and submit that third version. Once you submit the third time, you will no longer have the option to unlock the essay when submitting to additional schools. (This is from our family’s experience - our D submitted 3 versions of her essay to schools this year.)

Thank you for such a clear and detailed reply!!
