Common App Preview cut off

for the common app online, when I click preview at the top and scroll down to activities, a lot of the activites' descriptions (Positions held, honors won, letters earned, or employer) are cut off in the preview beacuse I filled up most of the characters in these...Should this be a concern, or will the colleges see the full text after I send it?

Colleges will see exactly what you see on the preview. You should edit your text. (BTW, one reason reason text gets cut off is because the font that prints on the app is not a fixed-width font, so a “w” is going to take up more space on the page than an “i.” Another is that hard returns count as more than one character. So even though the system will accept a certain number of characters, it’s no guarantee that all those characters will fit on the printed page. In other words: preview your app.)

one word: abbreviate…

One related question - is it normal that when I ‘preview’ my app, the Future Plans and the “any other high schools you’ve attended for summer school, etc” are totally blank?

what you see in preview is what they’ll see. If a section is blank maybe you didn’t save your responses there yet?

No… I checked multiple times. The FUTURE PLANS part is BLANK.

That’s because the Future Plans section varies per colleges.

So it’s normal for it to be blank?

Very good thread…I have the same question. My daughter wrote 3 short answer essay to her ED school but already sent it in. Now that we saw the preview the last couple of sentences are cut off but when you highlight the section we can see it all. She was well within the limit infact few characters left. After reading this post concerns me what actually the colleges see. Since in preview few sentences are cut off, what do you suggest she do? Send a hard copy of application? or email admissions and ask what to do but this college does not encourage have any emails of counselors available…please help any suggestions…now my daughter is panicking. Thanks is Advance!

powerbomb: Yes. As, long as you filled out each of your school’s Future Plans section, everything will be okay.

junior mom: assuming this is the supplement? I would have her call the school in question and ask…

I hate this so much. There already isn’t much space to elaborate, especially considering that you now have to choose an activity from a drop-down menu. I’m most definitely attaching a resume; this is ridiculous.

The Future Plans section will populate within each individual school’s Common Application, as long as you fill it out. It’ll be evident when you preview each school’s CommonApp just before submission. The Supplements are separate.

I have the same problem as powerbomb…

I understand the future plan will vary from college to college, but all my future plans are blank in the PDF preview, regardless what questions I answered for each college?

If this is what the colleges will see, then they won’t see any of my future plans?

Thanks for any help I can get…

Each college will see the future plans that you did for that school. The only reason it’s not in the preview is because each school asks for different information

@jgraider - thank you so much…

I just checked with someone who used common app last year, all the future plans are on the PDF preview, with variations from college to college of course.

Is this something new for this year or is this a bug in this year’s common app?

Anyone else is getting blank future plans in preview?

Thanks everyone…

The preview of Future Plans is so very confusing, to say the least. If you click on say Caltech, and then click on Future Plans, there are 3 or 4 questions there, e.g do you intend to apply for financial aid, what are your career interests etc. It makes sense that these questions are specific to Caltech, and would appear on the preview. however, they dont! So, are these questions on the Future Plan not of interest to Caltech? Then why are they appearing when you are filling up the Future Plans for this college?

For an application that is so important, one would think the the Common App org would provide better forms and or instructions. There are so many questions about previews chopping off text, what do the colleges see (the cut-off view in preview or the original inputs), etc.
