I was wondering which extracurricular activities i should add onto my application cause some were not that important.
yearbook ( 2 years)
stage manager of the annual Fashion/Talent show ( 3 years)
dance ( 3 years)
community service club (1 year)
book club ( 1 year)
volunteer at Hospital for special care (20 weeks)
volunteer at Imagine Nation Museum (4 weeks)
volunteer at Dinosaur state park (3 weeks)
I know most of the volunteering is short but thats how i got 130 hours and i want that as a part of my application.
I was also the student ambassador ( 2 years) but i don’t how to add that in my application. I would help with events whenever they come up but there was no hours per week or weeks per year.
This is part of the exercise. YOU get to determine what’s most important to you, in the order most important to you. If I were you, I’d place all voluntarism under 2 lines like this:
Voluntarism, hospital
Voluntarism, other: Imagine Museum and Dinosaur park
Obviously, the first 3 can go on there since it looks like a substantial investment of your time. Listing the various volunteer activities depend on how much time you put into each. If you feel you made a significant investment of your time (and/or it relates to you potential major), break it out. Otherwise you can group it as ‘various community services’ and next to it, mention National Museum, Dinosaur State Park, etc…and the total hours/week.
The community service club and book club are just noise in my opinion. If you had nothing else, you could use it to prove that you aren’t a hermit but it doesn’t say much about you.
It’s hard to tell with an EC without seeing the hours per week or reading anything about the impact. Dance if you are taking lessons, performing, teaching choreographing…could be impressive. Or it could just be something you do recreationally every week for fun and exercise which is fine but not especially impressive.
For the vast majority of schools, your ECs don’t matter - they just demonstrate the you are engaged in something outside the classroom and have something to contribute to campus life. It’s only at the highly selective schools where impressive ECs are used to differentiate between students who are otherwise indistinguishable with their top grades and test scores.
for dance i take lessons and give performances. ( 1 hour per week/42 weeks per year)
yearbook (2 hours per week/ 42 weeks per year)
stage manager( 9 hours per week/8 weeks per year)
community service club(1 hour per week/42 weeks per year)
book club( 1 hour per week/42 weeks per year)
should i even add book club and community service club into my application. @N’sMom
