Common App too long?

Is 850 words on the Common App too many? I understand that limit is set at 500 but will the surplus matter?

I’m pretty ignorant on the matter, but 350 words over isn’t a small amount…=P

From what I’ve heard, yes. You have to summarize things and make every word count.

Yes, 850 is probably too long. I have seen many students with long essays who don’t think they can cut them down, but when forced to, come out with stronger essays because of it.

I suggest combing through your essay very carefully, multiple times. Cut out any unnecessary or repetitive words or phrases. Ask yourself the following about each sentence in the essay: Does this part add to my story in a meaningful or vivid way?

I agree with ReesesPieces that every word should count. However, you should avoid summarizing. Summary is boring. Keep your reader entertained and interested. Provide some vivid description that takes us IN to the scene. Give us a slice of your life that shows us something about you.

Good luck with your essay.
