Common App viewed by admissions prior to submitting?

My son just got an e-mail from Duke's Admittance office stating that they noticed he had listed them on his Common App list of schools and that they wanted to encourage him to complete the process.

I'm sure this was just a form type response, probably sent to all in the same situation, but it makes me curious.

He has opened a supplement for Duke...so is that why they knew he was thinking of them? (he hasn't sent them any scores or transcripts yet) How much can schools view of someone's unfinished application? Can they read essays posted, even though a student might still change the essay and edit it? Can they see the other schools you're listing?

I remember reading last year about a woman whose daughter was admitted to Swarthmore and received a nice incentive aid letter with the admit letter...she had never completed the application process to Swarthmore, but attributed the admission to the fact that her daughter had listed them in the common application's "college" tab.

Any thoughts????

it must be the supplement

Yes, it is a mass mailing to all who have opened supplements. My friends got it too. As it says, it is simply to make sure we all get our apps in on time to benefit from the interview process...and it's sent from operations, not from anyone who cares about the content. Good luck.

I can't see these colleges wanting to read essays twice -- once is quite enough.

Has he submitted the Common App to any school? If so, it's possible that he inadvertently sent it to Duke by failing to remove Duke from the "My Colleges" list before submitting it to the college he wanted to send it to. It's a common situation. He should check the Common App and see if it shows Submitted to Duke.
