Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

“Are you allowed to add in things like awards from before high school years on the app? like if a kid was state champion/gold medalist in gymnastics or if a newspaper article featured another kid’s art skills or something? or would that be irrelevant now that they are in high school?”

ALso, yesterday when I opened the common app, in the parents section the title ‘Mrs.’ in the drop down list was missing. Mailed them about this.

BTW someone answer the question lol

spideyunlimited, they only have “Ms.” I guess they’re too lazy to add in “Mrs.” and “Miss” (if the mother is divorced) maybe because they only want to know who is the mother or the dad and whether they are married.

Yep, but last year it was there… hmm. ok

In CA, is Independent School = Private School? What is the difference between the given school types?

my school is outside US so Im not sure where my school fits in.

yep, independent. Public is state-aided.

for academic awards could I include, awards from fbla… im not positive that its where it belongs

Thanks Commonappguy, your info is very helpful.

My question…
D wants to write very institution-specific essays. Does she have to re-register and make a new application for each school or can she just send one at a time, edit for a specific school and send again?

Also, is it possible to attach a word document, like her resume, to the application at some point??

Thanks for your help!

Ms. can be used as a generic honorific for any woman, married or unmarried.

The title “Ms.” was developed and popularized during my childhood to avoid making the distinction between “Miss” and “Mrs.,” because no comparable distinction is made for titles for men. Like it or not, “Ms.” is current usage.

Why are all the school forms still formated for the 2007-2008 school year? Is that going to be fixed?

The colleges are still working on updating their college-specific supplement forms. Some are posted as of today (2 July 2008) and many more will be posted by the beginning of August.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to all our questions, commonappguy. :)

mister9a, I have the same problem except that only some forms say 2007-2008.

You can’t get a printable copy of the college supplements yet. I guess they are waiting for all of them to get in (or at least a lot more)

For the academics section, I’m confused as to how to list my senior year classes. Since it has a specific column for first semester and second semester classes, do you list full year courses twice (once in each column)?

^ Yes, I think so.

^^ That’s what I did.

Where and how should we submit Creative Writing supplementals? The Common App Supplement only allows for Music, Theatre, and Visual Art : (

For the personal essay I’m thinking that I’ll write about a topic of my choice. Do many people choose this option? And if I choose to give myself a prompt, do I leave it on top kind of like a title?

For the Dartmouth Peer Evaluation, does it have to be sent with the teacher recs and all??

And in the teacher recs portion, do the teachers fill in the space provided or leave it blank and attach a letter that they have prepared??

And do they have to sign all copies or not? I got two different replies … confused!!

And is it good if I send all the application like in September?? Good or bad?? And suppose if I do a new activity after I send my stuff, do I tell the adcomms about the update?? I am in my gap year, so no scores updates for me.

PS:I took the SAT in March and got a 2010 and sent the scores to my univ. And again I took the SAT in June and got a 2300 and send it to the univs. Will the twice SAT be a black-mark or something?
