Two options:

1) List the same activity as two different activities - listing the school year version on one line, and the summer version on the other line. Each can then have different hours/wk.

2) LIst the school year activity as the main activity, but then use the description space to say “increased to 20 hrs/wk in summer” or something similar.

List their dates attended (so far) and anticipated graduate date.

???so i haven’t been able to find this anywhere, can you get a fee waiver for the common app. if you are a transfer? I asked them and they just gave me something about high school crap, that doesn’t help when I have been out of high school for over 3 years now

The Common Application for Transfers will launch later this month. It, like the Common App, will enable applicants to tell colleges they would like to receive an application fee waiver. Every college decides whether or not that request is granted on an individual basis.

The 2008-09 Common Application for First-Years Students is now available as downloadable PDF’s.

The extracurricular activities section should include an “volunteer” activities - whether volunteer community service or volunteer work (if there’s a difference).

The work experience section is exclusively for paid work, whether you keep the income or donate the income.

The Honors section was re-formatted to help colleges better understand the scope of the award (9, 10, 11, 12, or some combination therefore) and the “level” of award - a school/local award or an international prize or something in between. If there are more than five significant honors to list, then the sixth most important on down may be listed in the additional information section.

The earlier early deadlines are not until November 1. You have plenty of time to carefully work on your application, and later this summer, your supplements. To submit these important forms quickly today, or this week, this month, or even this summer, often leads to mistakes and regrets that can’t be undone.

Have fun…

Okay so back to summer programs- do we put the location of the office of the program, or the location of the actual program?

So for the extra-curriculars, we have to say what it is and what we do for that activity in the “additional information” section? So, since I’m in my school’s German club, in the drop down I would pick "foreign language, type German club in additional information, and then write a couple sentences describing it?

What tone of voice/writing style should I use for this section? Should it be formal writing, bulleted points, etc?

There is no single answer to that question that will make sense for every summer program offered in the world. You need to do your best judgment in writing something that will convey as much information as possible to the admission office reading it.

In this hypothetical, German Club is likely the only thing you’d need to write. End of story. If you wrote the “Kerfluffle Club” then probably a few more words are needed to explain.

What tone of voice/writing style should I use for this section? Should it be formal writing, bulleted points, etc?

just like filling in everything…name, etc.

has anyone noticed that all the school forms are still formated for the 2007-2008 school year? Should I get into contact with the common app people to fix this?

Wow we should all give a warm round of applause to commonappguy - he’s answered basically every question here.

EDIT: And of course every other devoted CC member :)

It doesn’t make sense that the changes can’t be saved. Maybe you should just wait for a few days and then work on it later.

Question - which Common App supplements are available already? Apparently none of my colleges “require supplements”?

Are you allowed to add in things like awards from before high school years on the app? like if a kid was state champion/gold medalist in gymnastics or if a newspaper article featured another kid’s art skills or something? or would that be irrelevant now that they are in high school?

its gonna be up by the end of summer

***“Paid” Work Experience **

The extracurricular activities section should include an “volunteer” activities - whether volunteer community service or volunteer work (if there’s a difference).

The work experience section is exclusively for paid work, whether you keep the income or donate the income.*

What about unpaid internships?

Wow, thanks for taking the time to answer questions, commonappguy. I myself have run into an issue that the support-ticket team has been unwilling to resolve: Although the University of Virginia does not appear on my “My Colleges” page, whenever I try to add it by the search function, I receive a system message saying, “University of Virginia This school is already in your list.” I sent two support tickets today regarding this, and the CSR (the same one answered for both times) claimed the problem “resolved” both times even though nothing has changed for me. Hopefully, this is within your power to fix  .
