Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

mihan1: The book is summer if it’s only this summer. And NHS is school-level. Correct.

Thanku thanku!!

And mihan … writer eh??? Someone is going to an ivy …

dchow08/asdfjkl1: Intel STS is like a science talent search contest, at the end of it the finalists will get awards. So i should put this under the awards section and not under activities? But i can’t find the awards section. There’s only the honours section. Is it the same?

Also, must we fill up all 7 activities? How many activities are colleges looking out for? Is there any number that can maximize one’s chances?

oh dchow08 thanks for your help! =)

To the rest: How do we submit the supplement forms (ex. atheletics supplement/international supplement)? Is there a place where we can submit online? Or is it only by hard copy?

Oh and this time round, the form only allows us to put paid jobs under the jobs section. So do i still go ahead and put the unpaid jobs (science attachments) under the jobs section? If not, where do i put them?

No, unpaid jobs should either go with the rest of your ECs or in the additional information section if you don’t have room.

Is it possible to personalize your common application for each college? (i.e. it is possible to submit different CommonApp 500-word essays for each college?) How much can you personalize your common application for each college?

Yeah it is. In fact different apps are for diff colleges … you fill em up separately.

kwalnder: If you won an award, put it in awards. You won an award, right? Then put it in awards. Common sense, really. For example, I was on the math team in high school. That is an activity, so I put that on the activity list. Now, let’s say, as part of the math team, the team won 3rd place at a statewide competition. That would be an award, so I would put that as an award. So on my application, math team was on my activity list and for awards I listed my math team award. Yes, honors = awards in this case.

You aren’t required to fill in a certain number of activities you have. If you do fewer than 7 activities, then put whatever you do. If you do more than 7, put the 7 most important ones.

And to whoever it was: What exactly was your unpaid job? I still think it should go under work experience, because a job is a job is a job, but if you’re, say, volunteering, then that’s a different matter.

ok suppose we won an award both nationally and internationally for the same thing, which one would go into the awards section??

Okay, it’s really not that difficult.

If you won an award, it goes in the awards section. If you won a ton of awards, either just put the most important ones, or you can put them in Additional Info.

I’ll let you exercise your common sense to answer your question.

umm yes i guess then the international will be the one …

what should we put in the description line of the extracurricular activities?

what do they mean by letters earned when doing varsity sports?

u should put the description of ur EC … describe in a line as to what ur EC was and ur role in it.

i think some sort of recognition or award, though i m not sure …

a varsity ‘letter’ i think is earned by most athletes who participate in a varsity sport. our school is a little weird, not every coach gives them out (they’re lazy)

Sorry to bring this up again, but for the book translating thing, if I continue into the school year it becomes an EC? Thanks!

Okay, let’s define extracurricular: “not falling within the scope of a regular curriculum; specifically : of or relating to officially or semiofficially approved and usually organized student activities (as athletics) connected with school and usually carrying no academic credit <extracurricular sports=”“>”</extracurricular>

Now, I’ll let you decide.

Question: in the extracurricular activities it doesn´t ask for the name of the club, but for the category… should i put the name of the club in the description line?

^ Yes (10char)

Is anyone aware of when the Transfer Application will be released?

I know CommonApp has stated “later in July” but does anyone know more specifically?
