I work on a MMORPG as a development administrator, I spend a few hours a day there each day. Should I list this as an EC on the common ap?

So now you can’t post the volunteer work. Lovely.

hey i know this question has kinda been answered before but i’m still a bit confused
so I do National History Day, thats an EC/activity
but for NHD I’ve won 1st place at regionals three times, 2nd place at regionals one time, 1st place at States one time, 2nd place at states one time, 3rd place at States two times, Best State Project on a Minority Topic one time, and 11th place at Nationals one time.
I think this would be most appropriate to put in the “leadersip positions/honors” section of the ECs rather than seperately in the “Awards” section.
But, all of that won’t fit into the “leadership positions/honors” EC section though. Even if I did put that in the “Awards” section, would I need to do each placement as a different award?

this is the same for one of my other ECs (in this case it is a specific art award that needs a short sentence description and I want to put it as a “leadership/honor” for my art classes).

so what do I do?
I’m considering doing an Activity Sheet but I’m scared that it would just be seen as “fluff” since they tell you not to do a resume or something unless its necessary (like you’re a world-class musician or something)

^ I don’t see how winning a bunch of awards is a leadership position.

Anyway, you’ll write something like this:

National History Day: 1st state, Best State Minority Topic project, 11th place Nationals.

Keep it short, and only include the most important onces.

Under the activity section, im a bit confused. I do an activity where I participate 6 ish hours a week during the school year but 25 hours a week during the summer. How do I express this?

Similarly, I do another activity that i probably participate 3 hours a week but then there is a weekend where I sleep overnight as a counselor and do 72 hours.

These are important activities and I don’t want to leave them out of the top seven so how should I go about expressing the hours?.

Thanks so much,

This question has been asked on this thread already. Please look at the previous posts before you ask.

Anyway, the best advice I can give you is to just put down the number that you feel best represents how much time you spent. Mathematically speaking, you could use either the mean, median, or mode. Make sure, though, that when you add the hours/week of all your activities, they don’t add up to something completely exaggerated.

Another option you can use would be to attach a separate document on Additional Info that is essentially an extended activity list.

Btw the awards section is the “honours section” right?

Yes, it is.

Editing and correcting work
I am trying to help my daughter navigate this application. I have seen this question asked but have not been able to find the answer. In the activities section, can you save your work but then change it if you want to improve it? Not make it college-specific, but just use the form as a work in progress, until you are satisfied with it. Where in the common app does it answer these kinds of questions?

Yes. There should be a ‘Save’ button at the bottom. You can still make corrections, though. But I applied to college last year, it might be different this year. Try using the save button on something minor, and see if you can change it afterwards.

my middle school goes from 7-9 grade and high school from 10-12.

9th grade from middle school is still technically high school and its on my transcript…

on the app, do i count my middle school as a secondary school??

Yes, because colleges still probably want to see your 9th grade grades and activities and stuff.

well, the grades are on my transcript and i will list the activities… but are you sure i’m supposed to list the school? it already says the name of the school on my transcript. and it seems weird, it’s not my “high school” and it’s not on the list of schools most applications give or anything, and i never see any other middle schools.

:
hmm, i believe you.
suppose i should ask my guidance counselor though :)

If I were you I would just list it anyway, and once they see that it’s a middle school they won’t care. But it’s just to let them know which school you went to in 9th grade. Yeah, it’s a good idea to ask your guidance counselor too. He should know better than I do.

thanks for your help

sorry if this has already been asked, but why are there so many options for math subject tests!? I took math 2, but on the common app you have the choice between Math 2 and Math 2C. Why?

Yes. In fact this question was asked just yesterday…

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/california-institute-technology/411634-difference-between-math-2-2c.html

i was wondering that too.. i know i took level 2.. i mean, the only ones there are are level 1 and level 2.. it seems mathiic or whatever is just another name for it.. does it matter which you choose? i was gonna choose plane math 2 or math ii or whatever it says.. the one without the C. does it matter?

it doesnt seem that thread ever led to a definite answer

fine.

The C is old.

dchow08, about my previous question,
it’s not a leadership position but next to the activity it says “positions held, honors won, or letters earned.” wouldn’t this mean that awards related to an EC should be listed next to that EC rather than in the “academic distinctions and honors” section?

but if this is the case, first of all wouldnt it be misleading if I just listed 3 awards for four years of participation rather than to list all the awards I recieved for those projects (they were a lot of work!). or would it not make a difference?
also, for my art “honors” I need to include “top 5 finalist in BKFK Signature Style Challenge,” but I’m guessing they won’t know what that is unless they google it, so I wanted to put “national fashion design contest” but that won’t fit =/ do you think it matters? will they just look it up or something?
