so , this may be a dumb question , but the common app actually helps you find colleges?

Okay, if I’m an AP Scholar w/ Distinction…can I put that under Awards/Honors… Does collegeboard have to send us a paper saying that we’re ap scholars w/ distinctions or can we just calculate it ourselves and put it on the app…or should i not even put it considering i have to take Aps at the end of senior year

*Disclaimer: Yes, I know this is a trivial question:

So in the parents’ info section, it has spaces for two higher learning degrees. What if your parent has three?

alamode: If you see National History Day as more like an extracurricular activity, you can place a few honors next to that. That’s probably fine. I usually think of National History Day as more of an academic honor, but whichever one you think is more appropriate. Just list the most important awards. Why not all of them? Think about why colleges want to know what awards you’ve won in the first place–to gauge the level of hard work, dedication to excellence you have in that activity. It can also help if you plan to be a history major and have evidence that you’re strong at it and have a strong interest. Don’t give them a huge list of awards, there’s a reason why the space for awards/honors is small. About the fashion thing, just put something like Natl Fashion Contest, 5th place.

wazmo: Depends on what the summer program is. I took a Chinese class at Seattle U. over the summer once, and that went in colllege programs. Same thing if you take a summer school program at another college. If you’re interning, I’d put it under work experience. Just make it clear that it’s an internship and not an actual job. If the internship is a long thing that you do over the course of four years, then that can go in activities as well. Usually you mainly put long-term activities in the extracurriculars section.

gottofu: The Common app does not help you find colleges. The common app is a college application.

hereicome09: Yes, if you’re an AP whatever, put that in Awards/Honors. You can also put your AP scores there if you want. But you should wait until you get the actual certificate first. They’ll send it before college apps are due. That’s what happened with me.

elven_hobbit: Put the two highest learning degrees.

thanks dchow08. I’m actually starting the internship this upcoming august but i’m a part of the nonprofit for 3 years (soon to be 4) as a member. Do I just put down the dates that I know I will be working as an intern this upcoming year plus the fact that I am a member under activities as an extracurricular?

I attended some summer programs but it was through a nonprofit held at a certain university. Do I still put it down as a college summer programs?

If I were you, I"d put the years you were a member under EC actvities, and include the internship dates under work experience, as long as you make it clear that it’s the same program. For the other summer programs, they count as ECs, because you’re not taking courses at the university or anything like that.

guys, is it okay if i print out the recommendation form instead of sending it online to my teachers? because im an international applicant and im trying to save on mailing cost by sending all forms (recommendation letters in separate envelopes, with translated HS transcripts and others) together.

Yes, certainly.

Okay, I made an account and have a list of colleges on “My Colleges” but I wanted to look at the supplements, and they aren’t available yet, according to commonapp. So I just googled like Boston Univ application supplement, and got a link to this as one of the hits: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/CollegeInfo.aspx
I don’t have a clue how I can get to this page on commonapp.org instead of through google. Can anyone help?

^ That link looks really helpful! Maybe that was for last year? because none of the supplements work there either

Would paid internship look better than just regular Work ?? I had a summer job and my boss is willing to write a recommendation for either one… Or I may have my definitions mixed up and they mean the same thing???

Two questions:

So what if we won a large number of related awards? For instance, I won a number of awards at my county science fair, and one each at state and ISEF. Obviously, I’m listing the ISEF one, but how many of the others should I list? I’m tempted to include state, because it was first in catagory. I’m also tempted to list the special award I won at county, because it isn’t implied by my going to state and ISEF. But I don’t want to use up all my awards on one project.

Is it okay to mention significant awards that we won before high school under additional information? I have done science fair since 3rd grade, placed at state in 6th grade, and won a number of awards in 8th grade. I don’t want to just leave them off, since they put my current science fair involvment in perspective.

Fuzzylogic2525, I myself have a paid internship. I think in paid internships you’re supposed to be learning some sort of skill (for example, my paid internship is being an assistant to chess coaches in a chess camp, so I’m learning the skills of being a chess coach); in a job you are expected to have those skills (so you’d be coaching rather than learning how). But I’m not sure. Anyway, if that’s the only difference, then to colleges they probably look the same.

PhoenixStar:

Erm, so, sorry if this is a ridiculous question and/or has been asked before, but I’ve been wondering and would just like to be sure–

If you self-report SAT II scores, do you HAVE to send score reports to schools that don’t require them, or can they just ignore the scores you put down? I ask because I’d rather just submit my ACT to some places and not have to deal with my mediocre SAT I score being ‘exposed’ should it not improve come fall. Several places I’m applying don’t even ask for SAT IIs anyway, and I’d rather avoid spending any more money than is necessary sending the stuff.

How does one differentiate between hours spent doing something in the summer and hours spent doing something in the school year?

For example, I work a job full-time in the summer but only part time in the school year. The Common App only provides one box to enter hrs/week. How should I do this?

kokakola: I don’t know.

ufohunter: Come up with one number that is most appropriate. You might want to average or use the mode.

Ok, this has probably been already been answered but I am not looking through all 32 pages for sure.

I just want to make sure I have this teacher rec stuff down. So I invite a teacher through the common app email system and they go on common app and type my rec letter and other stuff and submit it? Also, do I have the choice of which teacher’s rec to send to whatever school? (since some schools only require 1 and others require 2)

K1N6 O7 SP4D35, I believe the teacher recs don’t have to be submitted online. They give you the forms to print out under school forms.

I have a question too. When I clicked for a print preview of my app, it cut off a lot of what I wrote down. But the app gives you a limit on characters, which I did not reach, so it should all show. But its cut off! This is not the print you get before you send it though, so maybe the official one will be different? (print seen through quick print on top of app page)

ex. under additional info I described my ECs in depth, did not go over the character limit, but it was still cut off.

For EC activities, if my EC’s are unique but since the Common App only has general categories, how should I do the stuff with the “Positions” and “Details”? As in, should I just put “See Resume” for all the spots, or try to put in a little and then “See Resume”, and such? If the organization is sortof obscure (at least in the minds of lay-people) then what should I do? For me it is a small problem too because all three of my major EC’s that I have national or state offices in fall under the category “SG/Politics” and so does my SG Pres office which goes under “SG/Politics” too, but each one is so different from each other that I’m not sure how to use this crappy system the common app gives for it.
