Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

@collegebound - I’m having the same problem with my AP and SAT II exams - all of the names keep getting cut off…

If you use the common app, all the colleges that use it should require 2. If they require 1, they probably have their own application. There’s an entire thread on teacher recommendations. You can ask one teacher to write letters for the common app and the other college app, and the other teacher just to write letter for the common app.

NY_Democrat: What do you mean by “The common app only has general categories”? Just list whatever activities you do. It’s really not that complicated. I just filled in the actvities, but in the positions held section I put see additional info. If the organization is obscure you could put “See additional info” and explain what the org. is. Your president office goes under “Positions Held…”

OK, another question…
Where does common app tell you if the college you’re applying to uses the supplements on the common app or their own supplements??
for example, I found the Rice supplement here:
http://futureowls.rice.edu/images/futureowls/FreshmanSupplement.pdf</a>
Is that ever going to be put on common app or do I need to fill it out separately?

I don’t know about this year, but last year there was a place where they had the supplements online on the commonapp website. Once you login, you should search around for something that says “My colleges” or something like that. It should be there.

Yah, but the common app says the Rice supplement isn’t ready yet…even though I found it on the Rice website. So I was wondering if Rice would put their supplement on the common app website later??

Probably, since it says that it isn’t ready yet. When the common app says that something isn’t ready yet, it means that it will be ready in the future.

OK, thanks!
One final question (or confirmation actually)
I’m applying to either Yale or Stanford SCEA so after I submit the common app for that college by Nov 1, can I still change things on my application?? For example, I have 2 major violin competitions in Nov and Dec and I would like to add that to my “additional Information” for my regular decision schools. Can I do that without creating a new account?

You know, it would have been better if you had just put one post with all the questions. No. If you absolutely have to, you would call the college and tell them that you want to add something. You can tell why you’d only do that if it’s absolutely necessary.

I’m just now signing up…

The first question “I am applying as a _____ student”

That should be first year right? Or do I just leave that blank (if you leave it blank it just says select)

Yes. Don’t leave it blank.

OK thanks

I registered and at the top it says "You are logged in as a First-Year Applicant
that is correct, right?

yes, you should be a first-year applicant

yes, because you’re applying to become a freshman, right? That’s the same as first-year.

yes, that’s right.

Thanks dchow!!

I see there have already been several posts discussing the word limit. My very preliminary draft is exactly 1000 words, I know I have to cut it down, but it’ll probably end up on the long side anyway.

I just want to confirm I’m understanding correctly: I read on a thread from a couple years ago that they will just cut off after a certain word count! If there is no max, that means they will not do this anymore, right??

Thanks!!

(Sorry new here I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this but…)

Does anyone know the acceptance rate for NYU?

kjj17: Different colleges do it differently. I think most schools just read the whole essay. I don’t think many colleges will actually count every single word. If the schools has a word limit, you should always follow it. They set it for a reason. If they have a recommended number (e.g. approximately 500 words) then you have some leeway.

jacobe91: You can look this up. 37% Don’t just ask questions here because you don’t want to look it up on your own in advance. You should post questions that you can’t find out on your own.
Sorry I didn’t even know how you found that out o.o;; haha. Sorry and thanks!

dchow08: thanks! what I meant is - I heard that the Common App, when you submitted the essay online, literally cuts off your essay after a certain number of words. lol. but I suppose that has changed :)
