Common Application 2008-2009 Questions & Answers

Again, this isn’t a place to ask this question.

And, it does. Moreso for internationals. Asking for need-based aid at any need-aware schools decreases your chances.

I am an international student and one of my teachers doesn’t speak English at all. I knew that last year, on paper recommendations, everything that was not written in English had to be translated. But how would a translation fit in the online recommendation?

THERE IS NO ONLINE RECOMMENDATION!

Please read the process of inviting your teachers. Filling out the recs is still to be done in the old way. Don’t worry.

Where did you get that from? I already invited a teacher who wants to do it online and she told me she has already managed to log in to the online system where she should send all the information. In fact, I can’t seem to find any pdf versions while I am logged in, in case my other teacher prefers writing on paper.

Another question: if I am taking a gap year, should I still fill in current year courses?

What I have learned and what everyone seems to suggest is that you gotta invite your teachers online. They take out prints of the form. Fill it up. Making x copies. I dunno how your teacher wants to fill in online. I will let anyone else comment on that.

Yes, you fill in your final year courses. But, I am unsure about the mid-year report. Schools differ in policy. Again, I will let someone else comment.

Ok, two questions:

Is it better to send the app online or by paper? My teachers would prefer to send their evaluations by mail.

Can I print the stuff I’ve typed into the Common App website and send by mail?

My careers counsellor is willing to send the applications to each college in one go each - as in, he’s wants to put my stuff with the teacher’s recs in the same envelope and send for each college. Is this allowed?

Here is what the common application says, at Instructions>School forms:

"There are a variety of school forms that need to be completed by your counselor/school official and reference forms that need to be completed by your teachers/instructors. These are outlined in the ‘School Forms’ section.

If your high school uses the Naviance system, then the school forms are available for completion electronically by your counselor or instructor(s) through your school’s subscription to Counselor’s Office. The forms are also available for printing by clicking on the ‘School Forms’ link on the left side of the screen.

For students at all other high schools, your counselor and teachers are able to complete these forms online using the Common App Online School Forms system. You will be required to enter some basic contact information for your counselor and teachers which will be used to create user accounts in the system for them. They will each receive an email with the information required for them to complete and submit the online school forms on your behalf. If they would prefer to submit the forms on paper via the regular mail, this is also an option they can choose.

Note that you must first enter your high school information in the ‘Academics’ section of the Common App Online before you can access the ‘School Forms’ section."

hieronymus,

Schools prefer you to send it online because it is more convenient for them, and I daresay, for you too. But the final decision is yours and your chances are not hurt whatever your choice.

Yes, I suppose you can, but why would you do that?

It is perfectly ok; as long as they reach the college, it doesn’t matter how they are sent. It would even be more convenient because of less postage expenses.

Righto.

But I recall that you cannot ‘mix and match’ the Common App; ie. I thought you couldn’t have some parts on paper and some parts electronic. Does this mean I’ll have to go all paper?

You must send YOUR entire portion of application either exclusively online or by mail. You are allowed to send the application online and have the school forms sent by paper, if that is what you mean.

Ok, I get it now. Thanks cristina89.

So, anybody else know that recs can be done online too? Seriously I didn’t know that … sorry! And what’s Naviance?

Yea adrivit, when you invite teachers, if you type in their email address they’re sent an email invitation to log into the system and fill in ur school forms online.

So, is that class officer position considered as School-spirit or Student Gov/politics or other club/activities?

I dont know if this has been asked but i cant read this whole thread..
if youre an ap scholar/ap scholar with distinction/or whatever would you say thats national or international? Cant people anywhere take ap exams?

just check one… the colleges already know that AP tests can be taken outside of the US. I’d say it’s national since National AP Scholar is higher of an award than plain old AP Scholar and the former is determined by the top scholars of a country (e.g. US)

AP tests can be taken outside of the US, but the number of people taking it is not so much as to declare it international. It’s national and US curriculum.

is anyone listing physical education as a class on the common app?
in my state, gym is required. at my school it counts as .5 credit per semester

also, any jkb people out there?

Why wouldn’t you list gym? If you don’t it will look like you are taking fewer classes. A lot of states require gym…I don’t think anyone will hold that against you.

Is it okay for me to have my teacher’s mail in the paper-based teacher evaluations of the common application even though I am submitting the rest of my common app online?
