Hey guys, there are 7 activities slots on the common app. Does everybody have 7 activities that they're really involved in, or do most people just fill in the last couple with like bs like NHS and Spanish honors society and stuff?

well i hav emore than 7 lol. i think u should just be honest, or if u have more, put your top 7.

Put the things you actually spend time doing. For some people that might be reading, babysitting. It does not have to be a school sanctioned club to be on this list. You do not have to fill each slot either.

Really? I spend alot of my time doing math and teaching my little brother math, but this isn't really like an activity...and then it has that part that's like "what positions, honors, awards have u won in this". So...yea i'm confused. What would u put in this slot if you haven't won anything?

I guess nothing...

Also, what if you've only done an activity at 1 grade level (I only did fed challenge in 9th grade, but I was team captain and we got 3rd in regionals...)

Anyone? Please?

Meatlovers,

First try to arrange your ECs in order of their importance TO YOU-- including 'odd' ECs like teaching your brother math. (That could be a fun essay topic, or element in a 'math' essay, BTW.)

Once you have this list in order of importance you may discover that certain items can be "sorted" and grouped together for more impact and simplicity.

For example, a couple of 1-year involvements may work under "Academic Clubs" or "Community Service" type headings-- then you can say, 9,10,11,12 and have the different involvements listed in parentheses, sort of like this:

Community Service 2 hours/ week (Habitat for humanity 9,10; Soup Kitchen 11, Amnesty International 12)

Remember, you can always put extraneous but important things on that Common App blank page they give you for 'further explanations.'

So if you really enjoyed something that you only did for one year and there was a reason you could not continue it, you could explain that.

The goal is to come out looking like someone who has a little bit of clarity and purpose to how you spend your time, and someone who genuinely loves at least a couple of activities... (rather than someone who is dispassionate about everything and has attended one or two meetings of a club just to be able to list it on the application).

Thanks for your input, I have about 5 activities that I truly enjoy, so would it be more advantageous to leave something blank, or to just stick a resume filler in there?

Assuming that an applicant is applying only to schools that use the best composite SAT I scores and require only two SAT IIs, how should he or she fill out the test score part of the form?

For the SAT I, do you (a) supply all the scores from all the test dates and note the test date for each or (b) note only the highest scores and dates?
Is it:
800 790 ____ (10/05) ____ _____ 800 (1/06)
CR M W CR M W

or is it

800 790 680 (10/05) 690 670 800 (1/06)
CR M W CR M W

I know that the colleges will see the other scores on the College Board score report, but I'm hoping that only a data entry person will look at them, and there's no need to emphasize the lower scores to the committee.

For the SAT IIs, do you list all three that you took (even though you only need two) or can you omit the low one? Subject distribution doesn't seem to matter at the schools in question.

Well, they want to know how you sepnd your time, so presumably there is something you actually DO.

My D put down the sewing & crafts time she spends, which is hours a week. Who cares if it is not an official club?

I would not put down filler stuff, I think it crowds out the real stuff- but that's me.

Grace I think it is the second version that they want; you can put your best SAT2s and leave off the lowest.

CommonApp has two teacher evaluation forms, and I'm thinking about which teachers I should ask for recs. 2/3 of the schools I plan on applying to accept the CommonApp, and I have a couple questions.
Should I use the same two teachers for all of the schools?
Since there is no optional rec form, can I pick a teacher who taught me in freshman year but is the advisor to a club I actively participate in? She knows me well and can attest to my character.
In general, how should I choose which teachers to ask?
If this helps, my intended major is biology. Thanks!

for common app, im planning to get 3 teachers to fill out rec's and then use mix and match using photocopies...
