Common Data Set Updates?

Does anyone know when colleges generally update the CDS and when that is available to the public? I’d love to know this years stats for the colleges we are interested in.

Thanks!

I’ve seen a lot of schools do it in the fall but it really varies from school to school. For example, Harvard doesn’t have last year’s cycle available yet even though most other schools have for awhile now. Some schools don’t publish them at all. Kudos to those that do so in a timely manner.

Go to the IPEDS site. Many schools will be posting fall of 2017 freshman enrolled stats mid to late may, according to that site.

The CDS shows information based on fall enrollment, so schools don’t compile the data until then and usually publish it in Nov-Jan time frame. But lots of school publish admissions data for the most recent cycle on their websites.

The college entries on http://www.collegedata.com have a fairly large subset of the common data set information.

I think they are just stripping most of it out of the CDS, though. The CDS is optional — UChicago comes to mind as a school that chooses not to publish the CDS.

Pretty sure that is the case, given that many the information items shown on collegedata.com appear to be exactly the ones found in the CDS (though some in the CDS are not shown on collegedata.com).

Chicago may not be publishing its CDS to the general public, but https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=327 seems to have the usual subset of the CDS for Chicago. However, the parts not normally included on collegedata.com (e.g. section D for transfer admission) is not something that the general public can find if the school does not publish its CDS.

The CDS is reporting undergraduate enrollment as of the institution’s official fall reporting date or as of October 15. The final CDS isn’t generated till after this data. However, sometimes schools will publish partially completed CDS, earlier in the cycle.

The CDS is a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson’s, and U.S. News & World Report. It’s how for example, US News does it’s rankings. Most schools do complete the form and share it with the publishers, but some schools will not make it public.
