For the commonapp essay question 'Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.', would I be allowed to talk about a genre of music as a creative work? Or are they asking for one specific thing, like one album. Also, can you ever get too personal with the essays? I was thinking of mentioning my somewhat strained relationship with my parents. It wouldn't be the entire focus of my essay, but something that relates to the other parts of it. Would that be acceptable? Or do admissions officers not want to read about those things at all.
