I am new to this site; truthfully, it took me about 10 minutes just to figure out how to post a thread.
Anyway, I know the commonapp essay topics for 2013-14 school year are out, and since I'm a rising senior, I would like to know if these topics are good/bad/terrible???

1.) My tumultuous relationship with technology (how I always used to be careless and how so many of my electronics have died or have had bizarre problems- and I how I learned to cherish these and be more careful) (Prompt #4, or #1, or maybe it doesn't fit at all??)
2.) The new Chipotle Adventurrito contest (something about this, I don't know how I will execute this yet-hopefully working it into the failure one)
3.) My love of airports and how I love being in airports and everything about them (For the place you are most content prompt)
4.) The evolution of my hairstyle/hair color (Central story to your identity, shows how I evolve as a person and my creative side)
5.) How art has evolved my view of the world and how I see things- (my creative, imaginative side- central story/identity prompt)

So those are some of my ideas, and if you guys could please tell me whether they will fit into any prompt, if any at all, and how you think they should be executed/if they fit? anything will help my writer's block.
Oh, and I forgot to say- I'm shooting for colleges such as Cornell, Northwestern, UChicago, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon, NYU Stern, etc.

First off, I want to say these are only my opinions. I have no idea who you are and how you write. A superb writer could take any topic and make a great essay, so if you feel one of these you could make a superb essay, ignore everything I say and go for. That being said, here’s what I think:
Could come across as materialistic but i don’t know.
I’m not sure if this is the most appropriate topic for your most important essay. While I am also excited about the prospect of winning free burritos, im not sure its a big enough topic to write about.
Could be very cool if written well. If written poorly, could be cliche, but the topic itself is totally viable.
My favorite of your list. Could make for a very interesting essay especially if your hairstyles tie in with your passions ( for example cut your hair so it wouldnt get in the way of your painting or lab work).
meh. Could turn technical very quickly but i don’t know.

Often times, what you end up submitting to a college is NOT your first attempt at a topic, but your last one. The only way to know which topic works better is to actually write the essay. Both my son and daughter, who applied to college 3 and 4 years ago, worked for about three months on their essays – and not just on one topic. Each of them wrote about 10 to 12 different essays on different topics and revised each of them multiple times. It was only after having polished essays that they were able to narrow down their choices and press the submit button.

My advice: Start with the topic you like most and write a first draft. Then, put it aside. Go on to the topic you like second, and do the same. After you’ve written all 5 essays, go through each essay and edit and revise. Once you have done all of that work, you will know which topic works the best. Essay writing is a process and you can’t make a decision based upon an outline. Best of luck to you!
