my mom says she heard somewhere that when schools know where else you are applying, they talk. For example, i didn't get into Taft and I am hoping I get into Loomis. She claims that Loomis and Taft may have talked and decided for some reason that because Loomis accepted me (well, hopefully) there is no point in Taft doing so as well.....
This seems pretty unbelievable, I believe there is some communication but how much really???

Not a crazy idea. I have still not seen a mutual acceptance from SPS and Exeter...it is very possible.

ANTITRUST. They wouldn't do that. The most popular schools are swamped with applications. They are too busy reading applications to chit-chat with other schools.

Thats what we think.

yeah that may be true because a lot of people get into exeter and not andover, or vice versa...

I agree with you mpicz. I have never seen Exeter and SPS both accept the same person. Happened to me...Accepted to Exeter, W/L at SPS.

Ya I've seen many andover and exeters. But I haven't seen SPS and Exeter

And ya..I got in SPS but w/l at exeter.

there may be some communication, but i didn't think that it would be to the point where schools wouldn't accept you if you were accepted to the other...

Believe me. There are serious antitrust laws. Schools do not communicate with one another about mutual applicants before March 10th.

There is such a thing as "fit." A student who would do well at SPS may not strike an admissions officer as a child who would flourish at Exeter, and vice versa.

I agree with that... I got two seriously different vibes between SPS and Exeter. Maybe I see it more clearly just because by the time I toured those schools, I was completely burnt out, and wasn't blinded by my nerves and excitement. :p

Ya I was burnt out by the end of my school tour...but SPS woke me up lol. Ok well if the antitrust laws are that serious then maybe not. But the schools didn't strike me as THAT different. No different that deerfield andover..or andover exeter..and so on.

Hmm... well, I saw SPS as a lot more of a community than I saw Exeter. True, no HUGE differences, but it's the subtle ones that matter most! I probably would have applied to SPS instead of Exeter, but I just was not willing to repeat a year, even though I knew about the benefits. The tour guide at SPS was also hilarious, and seemed to know EVERYBODY, while the Exeter tour guide seemed a bit frazzled.

Actually I did recognize that also lol. My exeter interview was this 2nd generation spanish kid. More on the artsy side...liked to talk a lot lol. His descriptions were so funny. Your right, it was more of a community, Exeter was cool too though. I mean its just to short of a time to get a REAL grasp of the place. Can't wait for re-visits...

GemmaV-Do the schools look at the SSS form to see who you forwarded your application to?

Yeah, antitrust laws are pretty serious. Btw, I have been accepted at both SPS and Exeter.

SPS has been a killer this year.

A compelling theory as it seems true in ALMOST every case but I have found the exception to the presumed rule (which I doubt it is):

Linds819: Accepted: Exeter, Mercersburg, NMH, SPS, Stevenson, Westtown; Waitlisted: St Andrews (DE), Pomfret

But that is the ONLY exception that I have seen on our threads so far ... freaky. BUT as gemma V said ANTITRUST laws i am almost 100% sure that there is no communication between the schools.

It is against the Principles of Good Practice to which all NAIS schools subscribe to talk or share names before March 10. There are also legal issues which have been mentioned here so despite coincidences, it does not happen.

But, yes, the SSS form does disclose all schools to which a family submitted FA applications so schools can pick up some info that way. That said, these are not the determinants for acceptance but rather about the fit for both the student and the school.
