Communications/Journalism

If I want to major in Communications/Journalism, would it be better to go to Columbia than Stanford?

I love the Stanford environment and everything about it, but I think that Columbia would offer me more opportunities being that it is located in NYC.

Thoughts?

heyy....I'm planning on communications/journalism and was wondering about that too...I'm not going to apply to Columbia though...the college experience at Stanford just seems like it would be a lot better, and there's always grad school.

I don't think Columbia (you are talking about the Ivy not UM-Columbia, I assume) offers undergrad program in journalism.

U of MO-Columbia is the one that offers one of the top programs in journalism (not sure about communication). You should also check out Northwestern; their schools (not depts) of journalism and communication studies are among the best in the nation.

I am also CONSIDERING journalism. Stanford has a strong communications program. Ultimately, I think you should go to Stanford because it has so many different strenghts. Also, you may change your mind about journalism: I worked at my local paper and HATED the experience even if I liked the IDEA of what I did. IM me if any budding journalists want to talk about it. (I think now I'm going into teaching now.)

Sam Lee,

I think you're right. People have told me how awesome Columbia Journalism/Communications is, but I checked the website and was unable to find Communication or Journalism listed as a major. I did find "Speech" which was the closest thing.

Initially, I thought about doing Economics as a step before law school. The major before law school seems to matter little, however, and I'd like to do something I'd really enjoy, which is something in the form of communications/journalism.

Maybe Columbia would be a good grad school.

I'm most likely going into journalism too, but I'm not sure... are mass communications and journalism the same thing? Are there undergrad journalism classes at Stanford that focus on how to investigate, report, and write?

hm.. stanford has a good communications program?

maybe i would be a better fit for stanford than yale.. (i was rejected EASC)
i wanted to double major in biochem and communications/journalism.. yale doesn't have a communications major.. funny how life works

deepdown,

Commincation studies and journalism aren't the same thing though they are related and seem very much so intuitively. Stanford's undergrad program is very much about what the name says--communication studies NOT journalism. There may be a course somewhere you can take for report writing but even with that, it's far from the rigor you would receive in a journalism program.

I did my undergrad at Northwestern (grad at Stanford) and I know their programs are incredible. Medill in journalism is very much like Wharton in business. Even though Northwestern isn't at the same level as Stanford overall, but given Medill's reputation in journalism and Northwestern's excellence/prestige also in the communication field, you may want to give it a serious look. Their programs are big and well-established enough that journalism, communiation science and communication studies are 3 distinctive majors (journalism is offered in the school of journalism while communication studies and communication science are in the school of communication, which also have majors in radio/tv/film, theatre, and performance studies). You should check out their sites to get an idea about the difference between journalism, commincation studies, and communication science majors and probably a better idea about what you are really interested in. You can double-major to cover both areas in two separate schools but you must indicate this intent in your application and be accepted to Medill because it's very difficult to transfer into Medill from another school once you are there.

One last note: don't take my advice as authority however since I was a chemE major. My perception about journalism/communication studies program pretty much comes solely from what I've heard, researched, or read about. I am trying to help but it's important that you know where I come from. :)

Thanks Sam Lee :) Actually, Northwestern has been one of my first choices long before Stanford. I think they are both tied as the place I want to go to over all the others. (Northwestern because of it's #1 journalism program and Stanford because it's... Stanford? :P) But the reason I didn't apply to NU early was because it was binding. I'm still applying regular decision however and I've visited the campus... I love Lake Michigan! Although it's sad that they now have to fill in parts of the lake to build more buildings because Evanston won't let them build inward!
