My daughter is interested in studying communications, public relations, digital media, etc.. Do you know of any mid-size (under 10,000 students), moderately competitive schools with an excellent reputation in this area?

“moderately competitive” is subjective… but here is a “brainstorm” list that I think fits your criteria:

Northwestern University
American University
Marquette University
Pepperdine University
Wake Forest University
Boston College

This is all I can think of at the top of my head. I’m sure there are many many more.

gingeralalover posted a good list. You can add Emerson College in Boston. Emerson is a communications/theater/marketing core college so she must be sure she wants to major in the communications field.

I’m seconding the recommendation for Emerson. I applied there and was accepted and the cost per year for me would have been roughly the same as I’m paying at my current school (might have been ~$1000/year more, but nothing drastic) and I kind of regret not going. I didn’t go at the time because I wasn’t 100% sure I wanted to major in communication, and if I’d changed my mind I would have pretty much had to transfer, unless I’d decided to switch to theatre. I ended up staying with communication and I’m getting an okay education at the school I go to (and otherwise love my school), and I attend school in Chicago which has plenty of communication internship opportunities so I think I’ll be okay but if your daughter is 100% sure she wants to continue in communication Emerson really is one of the better choices. Iirc they have a semester in LA program that seemed like it would be really, really excellent for networking in the entertainment/communication businesses.

I would also add Chapman University. Its up and coming and pretty competitively. I think Syracuse and Boston University have similar programs. UC Berkeley has media studies too.
