communications undergrad major?

So i think i want to be a [print] journalist. but i'm not so sure, especially with the dying newspaper industry. So i was thinking maybe i should major in communications, and then go to grad school for journalism?
would that afford me more opportunities if journalism were to fall through? like could i go into public relations with an undergrad comm. degree?

or should i major in journalism in undergrad too?

i don't know what to do! help!

I would advise against communications. (With all due respect - it doesn’t have much respect. It tends to be regarded as a mic.) Go to the best school you can get into, and major in journalism if the school has it as a major. Many don’t, prospective journalists in those schools write for the school paper while majoring in fields with an important writing component (lit, history, pol science.) With this kind of education, you’d be a good prospect for a PR job, especially if you do an internship in the field during your studies. A major where you need to write, read large amounts, analyze text and work well under a deadline will prepare you for many grad programs besides journalism - law, business, public affairs, etc.

Kickitup - I am sure there are 100’s of great schools out there with Comm/Journalism degrees. I believe in following your passion. Communications is a difficult degree to explain to people because in the past it had the reputation of being the “easy” degree. It is not black and white so some people have trouble accepting its importance in the business world. I work in corporate America and there are many top levels managers with communications degrees. Top schools are now adding communciation requirements to their marketing and business programs. Here is a link to Drake’s web page. It looks exciting to me!

thanks guys. i was completely unaware of the views associated with comm majors.

Excellent advice Kajon! Stereotypes associated with majors are an unfortunate development, especially in the communications sector. Hopefully with the explosion of social networking and media, communications will be able to shake that misconception.

Definitely check out Drake.
