Community College Students Transferring to UC Berkeley for Peace and Conflict Studies Major (PACS)

Hello! I know that the applications have already been sent, but is there anyone that is also applying to transfer from a CC to the PACS major? It would be nice to get to know other people interested in the major and that are going through the same agonizing period of waiting… if you want to join the conversation we can talk about the Transfer Academic Upgrade due January 31st, and we can clear doubts!

In my case for example, I moved to the US from Barcelona in 2013 ( I am a resident in Washington State, and yes I know how difficult it is to be accepted as an out-of-state student) so I completed my High School education with Catalan and Spanish. Do you think that this clears the requisite for secondary language?

Thanks! Looking forward to hearing from you!

Saw you on the other thread. have you figured it out yet? How did you fill out the “Major Prerequisites - College of Letters & Science - Peace & Conflict Studies Major” page? I haven’t taken PACS10 nor do I have 4 foreign lang classes, only three. Thanks!

Hey, not entirely. The other day I attended the UCB Webinar, and they said that we have to write literally PACS 10, Intro to PACS" , write UCB and write “PL” as Planned, for fall of 2016. It sounds a little bit stupid but that is how you’re supposed to fill a prerequisite that can only be completed at Berkeley.

I guess that if you just have 3 years of foreign classes, maybe you can write the forth class of this lang as “planned” again, but I am not sure… have you tried to contact them yet? In my case, I attended High School in Barcelona, and so I don’t know if I should just write “Spanish” four times…

Have you seen this:
http://iastp.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/misc_files/CURRENT%20PACS%20REQUIREMENTS%20%26%20POLICIES%208.5.15.pdf

It tells you that you can use your non-English classes and take an exam. But, it doesn’t say anything about how to fill out the form. At the bottom of the Major Prerequisites page there is a place where you can comment, I would probably try to explain the language situation there as well as write Spanish four times if you haven’t found an answer. Where did you see this UCB Webinar?

Thank you so much! I saw the webinar because I think that when I received the notification at January 8th that I had to fill up the updates and forms for Berkeley, I could also sign up for it. I’ll try to find if they posted it in their webpage, they said they would, and I will forward it to you. Today I’ll try to get everything done and I’ll send a mail with questions. Have you tried to talk to them via mail? I’ve heard they are very slowly at answering…

By the way, are you applying from a California community college? I am applying as an out-of state… Ok, when I have all the final questions clear I’ll post them here, if you want help do the same

Found it! Is this the one?

And yes I am applying from a California community college. Oh and what do you mean by posting the finals questions? Thanks so much for your help.

Wow yes! this is it! Thanks for finding it! By final questions I mean that I am going to ask them via mail this particular questions regarding foreign language

Alright sounds good!

Hey, I’m waiting on the response. In the meanwhile, I have a couple of questions regarding the general education/breath requirements, since I am not a Cali resident I don’t understand some of the titles of the class. Could you help me understand please?

First, about the math requirement: What kind of math class have you taken or are gonna take? Do you know if intro to statistics satisfies?

Do you know what is the difference between English R1A and R1B? Cause in Washington I have taken English 101 ( composition) and 201 (research paper). Do you have any idea?

Thanks!

By the way, I don’t know i’ve you’ve looked at it before, but this is useful , it explains double majors. Basically we have to contact the IAS adviser for anything.

I have taken stats and that fulfills my math requirements. Keep in mind that I have to use IGETC and on there stats satisfies it, it should satisfy the L&S Breadth Essential Skills though.

English R1A and English R1B are like the base English courses that colleges have for GE, if Washington’s Eng 101 and 201 are your ‘basic GE type courses’ it may fill in for California’s Eng 1a/1b

Your English 101 and 201 conversion can be seen here:
“Reading & Composition
If you plan on satisfying reading and composition with course work from another four year university or an out of state community college please click here for instructions.”

The click here link ^ not actual link, it’s on the Breadth page or here:
http://admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer_info

This link will show you the classes that are transferable to UCB, idk what school you are coming from though. Also it says “Please note: These are not the only courses that transfer from out-of-state institutions” This is odd, hopefully the link answers your question.

Hey, thank you so much! Yes, I had seen that link and it doesn’t explain all the subjects I’ve taken, but it’s a relieve to hear that your statistics class counts for your IGETC! really appreciate it, it isn’t very specific for out of state schools. I’m coming from Bellevue Community College  I’ll keep you updated of the info I find.

By the way, do you think that many people applied to this major? I know it’s speculation, but I couldn’t resist looking at this chart http://admissions.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/docs/Transfer_Flier.pdf : For interdisciplinary majors, it’s 28.3% of acceptance… better than social science itself !

I don’t think a lot of people apply for this major because 28.3% are accepted and the GPA requirement is 2.0 if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah… I hope so!

Hey, have you figured out how to write down your language question? I think that you can put “planned” and take one last class of that language in your college or here at Berkeley. The other day I suddently thought that in my case , “completing the language prerequisite by having attended High School in a non-english country” maybe it’s only referring to u.s students who’s first language is not the one thought out of an english speakign country… but anyway

Well, the TAU for uc and ucb has been submitted!! Now all we can do is wait for almost 3 months… if you guys want to keep talking here we can do it and perhaps celebrate when the time comes!!! if we make it, let’s have coffee at Berkeley

Yeah I figured it out. I just went to the UCB course catalog and filled out SPAN 4, PL , etc, then I wrote in the comments section that I plan on taking SPANISH 4 at UCB because my school has not articulated courses for it.

Anyways it’s done, now we wait. In 3 months if all goes well we should celebrate. When we find out, we should make a thread for anyone in PACS and see if we can all meet up or something.

Great! yeah, I agree! that would be cool!!!

Hey! when are the decisions supposed to be posted? I guess that we have to wait for the business hours… :-SS
