Community College to UCI?

What can I do to get into UCI from a community college? My GPA is 3.1

Did you apply this year? If you’re applying next year, get your GPA to 3.2 or higher and you can submit a TAG application. Also, it’s important to know what you’re majoring in. A philosophy major will have a much easier time getting in than, say, an Economics major.

Thanks!! I want to major in computer science, whadya think? Easy? Hard?

Generally, comp sci will be harder than most other majors.

Thanks so much for the info!!

Computer Science is an impacted major I believe?

Yeah Comp sci should be impacted. I got into UCI two years ago as a non-impacted poli sci major with a 3.03 and no TAG.

Also, another question. This is my second year at a CC, and in my first year I got a D in an English class and a F in a Math class. I retook them a second semester and got a B in the Eng course and a D in the math course.

I totally changed my study habits around after a some life changing experiances and I’ve gotten nothing but A’s and B’s since…explaining my GPA…

Are my original grades in my class going to adversely effect my chances of getting in? Or will they be more leniant that I impoved alot?

From [the UC’s Calculating GPA page](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/q-and-a/calculating-gpa/index.html):

So basically they don’t care?

I’m not an admissions evaluator, and you provided very little information about your particular academic profile, but I think it looks favorable that you passed your English class the second time around. However, the F to a D in the math course does not look good.

Is the math course a pre-req?

You need to fill out a TAG app which requires you to have a 3.2. I don’t think they’ll like that you got a D on your math course the 2nd time. I know that it is also a requirement that you take both calculus and statistics, one semester each. Good luck!

I want to transfer there as well :)

Yeah its a pre-req course, a pretty low one too. It was never hard, **** just happened. I got a F, then a D, then an A and A’s in most of my classes. I knew I could do it, I just didn’t have a reason to until recently and now I’m working my ass off. UCI seems like the right place for me.

Other than GPA, can anyone briefly explain the other factors that my acceptance will weigh in on?

So you took the course a third time and received an A?

If you can, like briceies suggested, bring your GPA up to 3.2+, preferably before summer. Also, if you haven’t already, check which pre-reqs UCI wants you to complete by the summer before you apply to transfer. Make sure you’re on track to completing all your pre-reqs by spring 2013, assuming you’re applying next year.

I don’t believe much has changed in that matrix besides the increase in minimum GPA requirements.

According to that matrix, UCI reads your personal statements, so make sure you have some kick ass ones. I say write well even if you become eligible for the TAG. That’s just me though.

Hopefully somebody weighs in with more information about UCI, because I actually don’t know much about the school. In general make yourself competitive by bringing up your GPA, show interest in your major outside of school through extracurricular activities, find a job related to what you’re studying if possible, etc. Again, if you can TAG, that will help you out quite a bit…

Ele thanks so much for all the help, I hope I can help you out someday to return the favor.

Just explain what happened in your essay. You got a higher grade, and that’s what will count for G.P.A. Just apply and see how it goes.

quotes from UCI transfer admission pages:

“For the past several years, the average self-reported GPA of community college transfer students admitted to UC Irvine has been between 3.0 and 3.6; approximately 76 percent of the community college students who enroll at UC Irvine have self-reported GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Because campus selection criteria (beyond minimum eligibility) vary annually, all students who meet the minimum UC admission requirements are encouraged to apply for admission. Students are also encouraged to indicate an alternate major on the admission application.”

And:

"
Computer Science and Engineering
(offered jointly with the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences)
Additional Requirements
Have a cumulative UC transferable GPA of 2.8 (3.2 for TAG)
Have a GPA of 3.0 in required courses
Complete one year of approved calculus
Complete one year of calculus-based physics with labs (mechanics, electricity and magnetism)
Complete one year of transferable computer science courses involving concepts such as those found in Java, Scheme, C++, or other object-oriented, high-level programming language
Complete one additional approved transferable course for the major (an approved math, science or CSE course - see column to the right)
Note: Additional computer science courses beyond the two required are strongly recommended, particularly those that align with the major of interest. Java is used extensively in the curriculum; therefore, transfer students should plan to learn it by studying on their own or by completing a Java-related programming course prior to their first quarter at UCI.
(TAG Applicants: any three courses required for the major need to be completed with required grades by the summer prior to the TAG submission period)
Approved Courses
One course in data structures
One course in software engineering
One course in discrete mathematics
One course in Boolean algebra
One course in linear algebra "

Wow thanks a ton!

:O) Your welcome. Good luck! Let us know when you get accepted!

What are the chances with a 3.1 GPA? Has anyone seen a person get into a non-impacted major (sociology) with this GPA? Thanks
