Hey guys,

I was reading about community service at Brown. I stumbled upon something called the Swearer Center. Could someone give me a bit of general information about it like different types of service or programs?
Thanks!

(A good Brown student knows how to do research): brown.edu/academics/college/special-programs/public-service/.

I’ve seen that. I was actually wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience

The Swearer Center is the main center for community service at Brown, serving the Providence community. Projects range from community health to education and housing. It also offers fellowships to scholarly and service projects developed by Brown undergraduates.

I’ve done a few types of community service, some affiliated with the Swearer Center, some not. Basically, if you want to do something, you can find a group doing it or start your own. Some groups are more official (registered as groups with Brown, receiving funding, etc), while others are just groups of people going to a location to do something once a week.

Thank you for this information.

Some groups have more applicants than they can handle (Brown EMS, BRYTE (a group tutoring recent refugee immigrant children) for example.) and these can have selective application processes. However there are many, many opportunities for service. Basically, if you want to volunteer, there will be no shortage of chances. Also the frats and most clubs, no matter what, do some community service too. (Some in very big ways.)

There’s SOOOOOOO many oppurtunities here at Brown for community service. It’s actually overwhelming, not going to lie
