I'm applying for the Community Service Scholarship, and had a question about one of the requirements.

Most of the community service projects I've done or started have been at a public housing community in my city that my mom works in. She has been the one to help me set them up, and basically help oversee everything. No one else who works there has really helped me.

Would it be okay if the recommendation came from my mom? My most substantial community service projects have taken place in that community, so it would make the most sense, but I'm not sure if it's allowed.

It’s allowed, but you will have to go to extra lengths to overcome the appearance of this just being your mom trying to help you get an extra $20K per year scholarship. I am not sure how you do that except to confront it head on by acknowledging that you know it could be taken that way. Then maybe you could disprove it by having testimonials from people you have helped? IDK, just a thought. But you will need more than just your mom’s say so.

Ok, thank you! Do you think it would be alright to e-mail my admissions counselor after I find out if I’ve been accepted or not and ask what I should do? Or at least inform her of the situation?

Yes, although there is a person that is in charge of the CSS that is not in admissions. Not sure of the name right off hand, but I know someone that does. I’ll get back to you on that. That would be the better person to contact after you find out about admission.
