Community Service Scholarship

Hey ya'll, does anyone know how many kids usually apply for the Community Service Scholarship at Tulane? And what percentage get 5k vs 15k? Anyone know the date applicants hear if they receieved the award or not? Or why they lessened the award to 5-15k instead of 15k-full tuition?

Any more info on this scholarship would be great!! Thanks!

I have heard that a few hundred apply and they give out about 30. I have never heard any stats on the distribution of awards from $5K-$15K. I was never aware of the award being any different amount, and I don’t think it was ever full tuition. You might be confusing it with the fact that you can add the CSS to a merit award such as the Presidential scholarship ($25K this year). If someone got that and the CSS for say $12K, that would essentially be full tuition. To the best of my knowledge, the only true full tuition scholarship is the DHS. I think there is one for Louisiana residents too, but of course that is not available to most applicants.

I think the notification date is mid March.

BTW, I don’t think they notify you if you don’t get it. I know they don’t with the DHS. So just keep your eye out here and on the Tulane site for any information that people are starting to get the letter. They send the DHS by UPS overnight or 2 day. Again not sure about CSS. But if you have nothing within, say, a week of people saying they have heard, you can be fairly sure you did not receive it.

DHS kids should be hearing in a week or two. Good luck!!

The OP is correct, in 2008/2009 the value of the community service scholarship was 15K- full tuition. I have no idea why the amount was lowered.

I stand corrected. It was indeed higher for at least a few years. I can’t say why it was changed in this particular case, but often awards come from a fund established by an alum’s gift. Maybe this is a case of that fund not being able to sustain the higher awards, or maybe Tulane is providing more of the Presidents/Founders types awards instead and so they are looking at it as a combination kind of deal. It would be interesting to know the history of those “automatic consideration” merit awards.

IIRC, the amounts listed on the TU website for the Comm Svc Scholarship have varied year to year. I recall one year it said something like $3-15K, then the $5-full tuition. So perhaps the funding varieds from year to year. Not sure. I do recall however that the amount listed on the application did vary from year to year.
