when are they announced? how many are given? i see some post stating that the $$$ amount can range from $5,000 to $15,000? is that right and if so what determines the amount? Do the higher amounts require more service hours or different programs? what are some examples of the $5,000 expectations as opposed to the $15,000 expectations or the $$$'s in between these two numbers?

From what I understand from reading old posts is that there are about 30 given out, and it comes express mail. According to posters who have received them they have been 15k only. ( I havent come across anyone who got less than that) The date that floats around for notification is March 20th. As far as # of comminity service hours etc, I havent seen anything in terms of #s. I do think it is highly competetive though.

malaml - I think the person that made that post about 15K only retracted it later, saying they were mistaken. I know in the past Tulane posted that they ranged from $5K-$15K, but I don’t know for sure what they are doing now.

smile - I don’t think that a $15K winner would be required to do more once they are at Tulane than a $5K winner, if that is what you are asking. I know there are some parents of CSS winners that read these threads, perhaps they can weigh in.

thanks for the help

Smile-I am the formerly misinformed one! All recipients must commit to do the same number of hours/semester. I am told the awards range from $1K-$15K. I have heard descriptions of many projects that won awards and frankly, they all seemed ambitious and impressive to me. It may be (and I am guessing here) that the students who got lower awards also received other merit awards. Good luck.

Any news on CSS scholarships yet?

My d heard March 20 last year so if history is reliable, it’s still too early.

something just occurred to me and I am curious what y’all think. my son has already enrolled in Tulane. Do you think that has any influence on the CSS? Do you think that because Tulane has this student in the bag, then the scholarship is not needed to influence the student?

I know that is not the case. I went back and looked, and both people that had committed and those that had not (which were the majority, naturally) have won the DHS and CSS. Actually they don’t have your child “in the bag” anyway, since you can get your deposit back before May 1, and it is a relatively small amount anyway. Tulane lost 50 students (and presumably kept their deposits) during the last summer as they got in from wait-lists or changed their minds for other reasons. So just a longish way of saying it is not a factor.

appreciate the response

has anyone heard anything about when decisions on the css will be released?

As stated above, they are usually announced in mid-March. It should be between the 15th and the 25th.

We are also waiting to hear. It will make the difference in weather we will be able to seriously consider Tulane. We have signed up for the honors weekend (at the time we were hoping for the DHS). Im thinking of cancelling since my hopes for the CSS are pretty slim. Do you think they will tell me over the phone if I call? I would like to be able to give the spot to someone else and also know if we should expend the time and $ for honors weekend. Any thoughts?

Doubtful they will release any info over the phone and in advance of the formal announcements. And I would think they anticipate some no-shows or late cancels for the honors weekends and other admitted students weekends. That said, don’t rule out any possibility until the scholarships are announced. You never know! And lots of kids apply for both the DHS and CSS, so maybe they have a plan…

We were attending Destination Tulane on March 20 of last year. I had asked a neighbor to check my mail and if there was an envelope from Tulane she was instructed to open it and call me, which she did. We were in the middle of lunch with the professors, trying not to like Tulane too much since without the scholarship, Tulane was going to be crossed off our list. But, it was good news and as I shared the news with my family, who knew nothing about the arrangement with my neighbor, I became a hero for about 5 minutes! That was a good day. Good luck to all the CSS hopefuls. It has turned into a wonderful program for my d.

Cute story, vitrac!

Thanks JYM!

Did you go immediately to the college store to buy Tulane tshirts and assorted paraphernalia after you got the news?

Well, not immediately, JYM. I believe we waited til the lunch was over. And in my haste, I forgot to use the discount coupons included in the Destination Tulane packet. It’s been a year and that still bothers me!

Well maybe your dd can accost… um, I mean befriend one of the visitors at the upcoming honors weekend and request any unused coupons. She can buy something new, or ask for a slightly belated credit on her account (well, she didn’t have an account then…)
