hey guys...im considering a research opportunity in UCSF...
can someone who does research there/commutes there during weekdays tell me how long it takes? whats the fastest way etc? thanks!!

If I leave the Berkeley campus at 2:00 I usually get to UCSF at around 3:15. I take BART to Civic Center then transfer to the N Judah.

wow more than an hour??? thats ridiculous!!! is this on average or once in a while?

okay..my other offer is from CHORI, any idea about that?

Yea, I visited a few times and took BART and Muni N-Judah. You want to get off the streetcar at Irving @ 3rd Ave to reach the Parnassus Campus. The N-Judah streetcar can very slow though, since it runs with car traffic after it leaves the subway tunnel. It definitely took me at least 1 hr when I visited on a weekend (with little traffic).

BART will cost $3.40 and MUNI $1.50 (one-way for both)

Double check that you're researching at the UCSF Parnassus Main Campus. There are like 12 other campuses scattered throughout S.F.

What do you expect, a teleporter between campuses?

no i know which trains to take etc (just had my interview today) but did not have an idea of how long the commute will be from UCB in the weekdays (I went from Fremont)...also..@CH3CH2OH, how many times during a week do you usually go and for how long? what are ur timings like?

To reach CHORI in Oakland take AC Transit Bus 18 from Downtown Berkeley. It runs directly down Shattuck, getting you within two blocks of CHORI near Aileen St.

This is definitely under 1 hour... more like 20-30 minutes with some walking. Besides, it's free with your Class Pass from Cal.

also...i've heard a stupid rumor that research at CHORI is not as significant as research at UCSF come medical school application time....is this true?

Probably just a stupid rumor like you said.

You probably won't be doing much research at UCSF if you're spending 3 hours each day just to get there and back. You can fit in more research hours at CHORI since you're wasting less time traveling.

but i dont think the commute time at night will be as worse as in late afternoon....no traffic almost...so return time will be close to 40 mins i think...so total commute time put together is around 2 hrs
i guess now its for me to decide which project better attracts me...

Im doing smth similar. When do you start?

Anyhow, I am just taking my car there. BART will take you 1 hr or less if you time it correctly. Car will take ~30 minutes, again if you don't go at peak time.

Good luck

so for people who commute to UCSF from UCB on a regular basis for research...it seems very tiring on paper...but realistically, is it bearable? like can homework be done en route? is it doable?

Doing homework while driving a car . . . not so workable.

Mass transit . . . as long as you don't need absolute quiet or lack of distractions, should be able to use the time productively.

so..the commute (while it sounds ridiculous by the numbers) is not actually that bad (via public transit)? can someone who regularly commutes please answer?

You are in the Bay Area right? Why don't you just do the commute once by BART instead of firing away questions.

You're going on BART which isn't bad if you want to do homework or read or something. Same thing with the Muni streetcars.

Bring some earplugs or music along though as it gets loud in tunnels.

yes i have done the trip several times but from fremont (where i live) and not in the late afternoons...so basically i want to know from people who commute to UCSF from UCB on a regular basis in the evenings and come back late evenings just how bad it is? i mean is it doable on a regular basis or not? that is my simple yes/no question...

no, it is not doable. are you happy now?
