I applied to Fordham for the fall semester and haven't received anything yet. I was curious about the Commuter Grant of $6000 that people say Fordham gives to all commuters. Is this true? What if I applied for on-campus housing, then can I call Fordham and ask if I can get the $6000 commuter grant and cancel my housing to save on costs? This is all assuming I get in and all, of course.

Yeah, Fordham gives a 6k grant to all commuters. You’ll still get it if you cancel your housing and switch your status from resident to commuter. Last year, I originally applied to be a resident, but decided to commute from home. Just make the change from resident to commuter with the financial aid office and you’ll get the commuter grant.

I think your Fordham experience would be very different as a commuter than as a resident student so carefully consider your options before you make a decision. Of course, if money is a big issue it will be much cheaper to commute ($6,000 grant + no room and board costs).

You should be very careful. If you become a commuter your total college costs will go down which could in turn impact (decrease) your overall financial aid package. Make sure you get all of the numbers straight before you make a decision.

i know this thread is pretty dead but on the off chance someone see this…Does that 6000 just go towards a tuition discount or can you actually get that grant in the bank. I was thinking of maybe eventually getting a small apartment off campus and this grant could go a long way towards helping me pay monthly rent (not all of course). I would technically be a commuter so this is possible correct?

I believe that the commuter grant is taken off your tuition bill. You would have to work it out with your parents (or whoever is paying the bill) to have them give you the amount they saved with the commuter grant for off campus housing.
