Hey. I have a place to live around UW but it I'm also considering commuting to UW. I was just wondering. The Seattle area isn't used to snow. I've lived in snowy areas and when snow hits Seattle, they can't seem to handle it in terms of transportation for reasonable reasons. So, are there any issues when commuting to UW in the winter quarter? Are the buses late? Is there no bus service when school is in session? Any comments or advice would be great.

Do lots of people ride scooters around school area? I am thinking of selling my car since I will be living very close to school and the insurance is expensive… Does it look dumb when a guy riding a scooter in the U.S?

It hardly ever snows in Seattle, so it’s really not a huge issue. Even when it does snow, a lot of professors cancel class (they don’t want to have to commute either) or at the very least they are understanding if you can’t make it. I live on campus so I don’t know all the details about commuting during snow, but this website might help – [Metro & Snow - King County Metro Transit Alerts Center](The page you requested has moved to a new location.)

metro service through the u dist. is good, community/sound transit busses are a bit more sparse. the one day last year that it snowed and we had class the busses were ****ed up but you just gotta know your snow route and plan ahead a bit more, or just skip class. not a huge deal.

Seattle doesn’t get snow all winter long, and many years, it gets none at all. When there is a heavy snow, it basically shuts down for a day or two – city government closes early, etc. MANY people don’t go to work, the public schools close, and I’m sure you wouldn’t be the only one not showing up for class.

If you’re “near” UW, would you be within walking distance?

I’m not walking distance but I know routes that go to the U District. I would be taking community transit.

Ha! I’ve thought to myself about getting a scooter because… Well, two of my classes are 10 minutes apart. Now, I know… But I decided to go with it because I liked my schedule overall.

=/

^
Just wondering, how far are those 2 classes away from each other?

Btw, a question to those are familiar with UW’s campus. I have 2 classes that are 10 min apart… The buildings are kane and denny. Also, is miller and gowen. Will there be a big rush in between those classes???

Usually the red square, near the fountain, and through the quad gets kind of congested. If you look around, you sometimes find ‘short cuts’ that seem to take a longer walk, but are actually faster because less people use them.

Kane to Denny should be no problem in 10 minutes. Miller to Gowen are really close … Gowen is connected to Smith, which is right next to Miller. :)

Check the map to see! [Campus Maps - washington.edu](Campus Maps)

The longest quick-walk I had to do was last Spring from Raitt to Anderson. Took about 10 minutes, but I had some friends in my class in Anderson so they saved me a seat =D

Edit: My Autumn schedule last year on Wednesdays was like … lecture, lecture, lecture, lab (every other week), seminar with 10 minute breaks between each class, so I was eating lunch while going from lecture to lab. You might get a schedule like that sometime, don’t worry about it.

And if you’re getting a scooter, find paths where less people walk in. If you’re walking from the red square to the fountain between classes, for example, it gets so congested that having a scooter is kind of useless unless you go around the buildings on the way …

No, and no.

Just hope the rooms don’t change…that happened to me once and this was my schedule <a href=“ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs”>ImageShack - Best place for all of your image hosting and image sharing needs;

UW student is right

Once, they moved a class of mine a few days before class was to start to Condon Hall. Even running, there is no way I could make it in 10 min.

Every quarter, they’ve changed one of my classes rooms (perhaps I just have bad luck)

I’ve learned my lesson, I try not to schedule back to back classes anymore.

Aww travelgirl, that’s horrible. =( I’ve been fortunate enough to only have one class change rooms, and it was in the building next door.

I agree with what you’re doing though … I try not to schedule back to back classes, but I usually can’t get around it with CSE classes being offered only in one lecture or something. It really depends. However, it’s nice to not have to rush from class to class.

Sorry for the delayed response.

My 10 minute sprint is from Thompson Hall and Kane.

How do you guys feel about that?

Being a commuter, I honestly didn’t feel like having classes at 830AM (I know, how lazy of me). Imagine the traffic…

Actually, it doesn’t appear too bad. I’m just worried about having that brief time to settle before class starts. Looks like I’ll be okay, right?

You should be okay. I do suggest trying to make friends in each class and saving seats for each other though, that probably saved me from having to sit in the very back for some classes.

Thomson and Kane will be just fine. That’s probably a … four minute walk, I think? Should be okay.

^ Hope you’re super right, because I’m throwing away my anxiety!
