Transportation/Housing Question :)

Hi I am new to this forum and I just got admitted to Udub.

I read a lot of posts here, is very helpful. XD

I need to move to Seattle area and I have an idea. I am wondering if u guys can give me some suggestions.

If I live near Lynnwood area and buy a motorcycle to drive to UW, can anyone tell me is the motorcycle parking in UW is always full like the car? If I rent a parking slot nearby, will it be the solution?

Or should I just rent the apartment in the U district and walk?

Thank you very much!!!

What parking lot are you talking about? For example, E1 is never full.

Umm… I am majoring in Psychology, so I guess most of my class will be in the Guthrie building?
Maybe the W parking lots?

Have you seen this page?

[UW: FS: Commuter Services: Motorcycle (CYC) Permit](http://www.washington.edu/facilities/transportation/commuterservices/parking/permits/motorcycle-cyc-permit)

Clifford1993: FYI, your major doesn’t matter. You will have classes all over campus. Not only do you have to take a lot of classes outside your major, but often times classes for a particular major is not located in the building the major itself is in

For example, I am graduating next fall and have never had a class in my major’s building.

U.W. Student: YA, but they don’t have a statistic of the occupation for the car parks.

Travelgirl: Oh, thanks. So living near north or west campus won’t matter?

I would highly recommend living closer to the campus for the reasons 1) lesser commute time, and 2) avoiding freezing Seattle rain on your motorcycle.

Several points, I live in North Seattle and on days when the bus won’t do I commute to school via my motorbike as well.

For some reason the pavement on I-5 changes between the 65th Street area and UW and the road becomes slippery on the freeway. It is extremely dangerous and I would never ride on it if it were wet. That said, I don’t think it would behoove you to commute from Lynnwood via motorbike.

If you’re new to the Seattle area then I need to warn you. LYNNWOOD IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO LIVE!!! Don’t move there. There are surveillance cameras everywhere and according to a columnist in the newspaper the judge said that if you don’t come to a complete stop for 3 full seconds then you are worthy of a ticket under their city law. Also, during peak traffic times it can take up to an hour to get to UW from Lynnwood and vice-versa.

If you are going to ride a motorbike to campus the best place to park is either near Greek Row or in University Park, those are the areas north of 45th and east of 15th. In Seattle Municipal Code motorcycles aren’t subject to zone restrictions, so you don’t need a permit or need to heed the 2 hour parking limits of University Park. I would also recommend that it’s easy to park in Greek row because there are a lot of frat/soror peoples who don’t move their car for a week or more at a time. I look for the cars with needles and debris on it then I park between them, knowing it’s unlikely they’re gonna move their car.

I would get an apt in the U-District and walk. As an Economics person I will say that it’s worth the extra $50-$100 a month as long as you can actually study and have things be convenient. I would still get the motorbike and tool around the area on it. Although I don’t recommend hanging out at the scooter cafe on Roosevelt. Sad day.

Any idea how much a studio apartment that is walking distance from UW would run (ballpark)? 30 minute-hour walk one way is fine for me, I just want to get rid of my car.

sgcore: Thank you very much :)

XaviFM: These are nice suggestions. I never drive moterbike and i think i am finding an excuse to get one. Thank you very much, I am I am just gonna find an apartment in U district.

Sumanye: Just got the admission decision few days ago. Didn’t get a chance to actually ask and look. But from what I see in Craiglist, I think u are looking at $700~$1500…

@Sumanye: [Classifieds | The Daily](http://dailyuw.com/classifieds/) look for rooms for rent.

Also, check out [Calhoun Properties - Seattle’s Solution for Affordable Housing](http://www.apodment.com)

Sometimes you have to share a kitchen or a bathroom, but that link they’re $350-$650 for a room or a studio.

Awesome, thanks guys :)
