<p>Hey, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this?
As a cal resident commuter, UCLA has an estimated cost of around 8K, but then they add an additional 4K under the room&board category. Is this optional? What does it pay for? Is it assuming the student would be taking lunches at the school?</p>

<p>its just an estimate of your potential costs, not an actual fee/charge. probably accounting for food/gas/etc.</p>
<p>Well gas is calculated separately. I just don’t see what potential room&board cost there could even be for a commuter.</p>
<p>Not sure why it’s there but if you get financial aid its good that they have it there. They estimate that you may spend that much and give you more aid as a result (loans, grants, whatever).</p>
