ePal cost of attendance overestimated?

Question : On my ePal, the estimated cost of attendance is $22,641. Room and board is listed as $11,928 on the "Guide to My ePal"! That seems like a far cry from a triple in a residence hall, which would be in the upper $8,000 range depending on the meal plan.

So does anyone know what's up? Why is the estimate so high, when the price of housing on UCLA's Housing site is significantly lower? According to the site, even the most expensive housing (double occupancy with private bath in De Neve, etc.) is barely over $12,000. I assume that the rates naturally hiked up as they always do, but it can't be that much.

Also, how accurate is the $1,485 figure for books and supplies, and the $1,449 for personal expenses? I figure if I don't drive, I can subtract the transportation estimate, and I already have health insurance, so I can take that out too.

Basically, I have a Cal Grant that pays for the tuition/registration, as well as $4,000 in university scholarships, and am trying to estimate the cost of attendance. I'll try to be stingy with my money, too. :p

Yes, the room and board price is rather off, I'm not sure why. 1485 is pretty accurate if you're buying books from the campus bookstore, you can spend a lot less ordering it off the internet used. As for personal expenses, that's your own call...depends how much you usually spend for things like clothing, movies, eating out, etc.

the room and board is just an average. last year, i remember i put the average for the lowest possible residence hall/meal plan combination and the highest possible deneve/meal plan combination and it came out to be around the room and board average that they listed. if not, then its just an overestimate because some people actually want to live in the more expensive halls, so they don't want them to end up underestimating their budget!

for the personal expenses... thats really up to you. you can almost spend next to nothing on personal expenses.

so far, i find the total cost of UCLA for me to be around $18k i think, even though e-pal said around $21k (standard for everyone). i'm at a triple in a residence hall, don't need much transportation (live in socal), waived the health insurance, books haven't been too high yet.

if you are a science/math major, your cost of books will probably we higher.

if you are from socal area, your transportation shouldnt be a big factor.
