I live approx 40mins or so away from NYC. do you think commuting is a good idea? has it been known to cause problems?

yea i had the same question...i live in queens and its only about a 35-40 minute commute by train....but ppl tell me the vast majority of freshmen commute there, and its harder to make friends otherwise.

just wondering, replay, do you mean you're 40 minutes away from NYU or from Manhattan or from all five boroughs? Because when I went on a campus tour last fall, my tour guide commuted and she lives in Westchester...I'm not exactly sure how far that is although I assume she probably lives in the part of Westchester right out of the Bronx.
I'm having the same problem. I live at the end of the line in Brooklyn.

try to work out a way to live at NYU, if $$$ is a problem, maybe you could try for a low cost spot at Third North and small meal plan, if $$$$ is not a problem, definitely absolutely you gotta live it. That's the best part...socially and educationally.

moose, i live 40min away from mahanttan not NYU. I live on Long Island (near the border of nassau and suffolk county). My parents work in an area in brooklyn which isnt far from NYC, so they'll be commuting anyway and money is definitely an issue. Rite now im caught up between NYU and BU. With BU i wouldnt be commuting but what im paying for BU is gonna be the same for NYU if i commute bc BU offered me a scholarship. NJ1grl, how much would a dorm at Third North and a small meal plan cost?

so not all the dorms cost the same amount? some cost less than the $11,000 they estimated, because I really do want to get a dorm...and the meal plan wasn't factored into the $43,000 total cost right?

look into low cost triples, I don't know how easy they are to get, here's the link http://www.nyu.edu/housing/payments/freshmanroomrates.html

Did you factor in LIRR monthly fare, which has got to come to over three thousand for the school year, and metro card to get from Penn Station to West 4th Street?

Years ago I tried commuting to NYU from Long Island and it was really, really sad, lonely and ultimately unbearable. I begged and pleaded and finally moved into the dorm second semester. NYU is not like Queens College or St. Johns where people commute: you will miss out on most of why you want to go there in the first place by commuting.

If you really really can't swing it, go to BU

yay low cost triples! i wasn't even aware they existed. i just kind of assumed i wouldn't be able to afford housing :)
does anyone else know how easy (or not) it is to get one of the low-cost triples. it seems to me like most people like hayden more than rubin. also, any other comments about the low cost triples themselves?

thanks!

how are the low cost triples at rubin and hayden?

My son's friend is commuting for monetary reasons. He also packs a lunch and a snack. NYU is very expensive, and he really wants to go there.

My brother's commuting in Australia took ~ hour but he said that it wasn't much of a trouble. Hell, he even finished a couple of novels just from "commuting reading" :D.

I'll also be commuting to NYU but I'll be only 10 minutes away ^^.

We were told yesterday that low cost triples are about $2000 less than the regular dorm rooms

i have a feeling that i might go for a low cost

This cannot be said enough times. DO NOT commute, especially freshmen year. Over 90% of NYU freshmen and the vast majority of upper classemen live in dorms. Someone who decides to commute will be at huge disadvantage in everything, especially making friends freshmen year. So if you can avoid it, don't commute, and live in residence halls, at least for the first year.

how are the low cost triples if you will be dorming with two other people you don't know? would it be "cozy" or just "cramped" (assuming you don't become really good friends with your roommates)?
how do you choose who has to bunk? haha.

also, is it true we can wait until after the orientation to request specific roommate(s)?
