Commuting Life???

Hey everyone~ I've always been really interested in NYU. I love New York City, the amazing academic/ career opportunities they offer, and the large, diverse student population. I went on a tour a few months ago, and liked it a lot. Right now, it's one of my top two first-choice schools, and I'm very interested in going there (if I get hopefully, that is!)

The only concern I have is, do many people commute there? I don't live too far from NYC, and thought I'd save some money by not dorming there. Aside from academics in college, I really would like to meet some new friends, and have some sort of a social life. Nothing crazy, just some people to go out to eat with or watch a movie with once in a while. Is commuting hard socially?

Anyone have experiences with this??

This has been discussed extensively very recently. Do a search through the forum, and if you still have questions, let us know.

Well, I don’t have any experience in the matter, but it seems to me like maybe it would be good to consider dorming for your first year, then commuting when you’re an upperclassman. If you start out as a commuter, it’s really hard to get back into university housing as your housing is no longer guaranteed once you leave the ‘system’.

I live pretty close to NYC myself, but I decided that commuting would rob me of so much in terms of social life and the college experience that it just wasn’t worth it.

There is a whole department devoted to commuters. There is a lounge and I believe activities just for them.
