How is the computer science program a fordham? What type of opportunities(internships and jobs) do the students get?

I am in the middle of the Comp Sci major and I gotta say it’s pretty meh. I mean, the curriculum is fine and all, but what hurts Fordham’s Comp Sci department are the professors. Not to sound racist, but there are just too many Chinese professors with poor language and lecturing skills. This leads to the department being either:

An easy A for students that can teach themselves, but not learn many interesting things

A really hard and frustrating time

I’ve had some good, challenging classes (Professors Lyons and Weiss are good), but plenty of classes that I aced just by reading a head a week before the semester started. Some of the classes are out of date and touch with modern demands (Web Programming class STILL teaches Perl), and many times I’ve felt like I could be teaching myself more useful stuff.

The best thing about the CS department is that it’s not too difficult to pull of an A in most classes, which is good for graduate school applications.

The department is awful. Your best bet is to do the combined plan and go to Columbia for engineering, where you’ll actually learn something.

If you don’t want to do the combined plan, then, like the above poster said, take Lyons and Weiss. I also heavily recommend Papadakis – Papadakis will really, really teach you.

Avoid Li. Avoid Tran. At all costs. They give you A’s so you don’t complain about the fact that you learned nothing.

But overall the department is pretty terrible. I think they’re remodeling it (so you actually have to take calculus as a computer science major >_>), but I don’t know.

I’d recommend majoring in math and minoring in comp sci. That’s a really good blend, and the math department at Fordham is outstanding. If you don’t want to major in math, at least minor in it to go with your cs major. Unless you have absolutely no ambition, in which case you could just forget college and go work at a car wash.

In terms of jobs…you’ll get jobs if you have a good GPA and have some idea of what you’re talking about (the two of which somewhat oppose each other in Fordham’s CS department, pathetically). The Fordham brand goes decently far. The NSA hires Fordham computer science students from what I heard, and most people I knew found jobs…so I guess the department can’t be too terrible

Good luck!

Personally I like how easy some of the classes are—plenty of time to teach myself stuff that is actually useful. I learned a lot of JavaScript frameworks on the side this semester because of my 3 CS classes only 1 required any thinking outside of class. I landed an web dev internship because of what I learned on my free time.

Oh and I do agree with Integer about the Math department. I am taking some math classes this semester and the quality of professors and the challenge I get blows any CS class out of the water. Fordham REALLY needs to get better CS professors.

Its awesome.

@integer can i do the combined plan while taking comp sci at fordham? @Matachines @integer how good of a gpa is needed to land a decent to good internship/job

GPA for Comp Sci doesn’t matter as much as what you can do. Just get more than like 3.5 or even 3.4 and you are good, but have a portfolio of programs or personal projects you have done.
