Would a minor in communications and business administration benefit a Computer Science major?
I am computer science freshman coming into college with 26 credits. One of my computer science professors told me that I should minor in something unrelated to computer science that would give me skills and qualities to set me apart from other comp sci majors. I want to do that and I here to see if anyone else agrees or disagrees in what she said. In addition, are their any other minors that would help me?
PS: My professor also said that minoring in Math would be pointless since computer science students get some much of it.
It certainly wouldn’t hurt. Are you interested in communications? If so, I say go for it. If not, pick a different minor that you’re interested in.
I wouldn’t call a math minor pointless, but how much it adds depends on the requirements for the minor and how far they go beyond the math requirements for the CS major. Go for it if it interests you.
Minors typically don’t really make much of a difference in hiring. Generally speaking, your minor is only important if it gives you some kind of new angle or skills that you wouldn’t already acquire otherwise - like a psychology major minoring in statistics and going into quantitative psychology, or a computer science major minoring in English and going into technical writing. And even then, there are other ways to build skills besides a minor.
Don’t minor in communications because you think it’s going to “set you apart.” Minor in it if you are interested in comms. Otherwise, pick something else or don’t minor in anything at all.
