I've noticed there's a lot of different services that will correct your essay, but they are extremely expensive imo. Are they worth the steep price or am I better off having friends and family read over my essay?

My English teacher was nice enough to proof-read my essays and offer suggestions. Ask your teacher if he/she would be willing to read over yours.

Why spend a lot of money, when there are others that will do it for free.

I agree, I'm a transfer student and I actually asked my previous college's 'academic support center' to correct it. It's a program where they hired retired newspaper/etc. editors to correct students' papers, they are really good, but I would never pay for the service.

Definitely better off with the free people. If you feel shy about your essays (I know I was) then you don't have to show your family/friends. Try neighbors, teachers, counselors, etc.

ask english teachers (past and present), your guidance counselor. i even asked my english teacher to give it to another english teacher that i didn't know so i could get a perspective from someone that doesn't know me at all

Using those services is cheating and I hope we don't apply to the same schools, I don't ask anybody myself b/c I am a firm believer in doing my own work.

Every author has an editor. I personally am appalled by the companies that essentially write the essay for you, and I think there is a limit to how much help you should get, but there's nothing wrong with asking someone you trust for some input. At my school, many 12th grade English teachers make writing a college essay a homework assignment, then give feedback to the students.

Well I guess that's true but I know some teachers that go way beyond just proofreading.
