Looking for totally arbitrary, subjective and opinionated replies... for pre-med does anyone have an opinion when comparing Lehigh verses Amherst. I understand Lehigh is 3x the size, near a large city and that Amherst is rural with the 5 college consortium. Based on what you have experienced, heard or had implied to you, for a pre-med student (read; all the usual required undergraduate courses) do you have an opinion regarding which is "better", however you may choose to define "better"?

Amherst is considerably more selective and it’s right up there with the Ivy League in terms of prestige. I think it’s also a more scholarly/intellectual place than Lehigh.

Which isn’t to say that Lehigh won’t give you a solid pre-med education. It’s just a school for different type of students.

If you are looking for a pre-med program in the Lehigh Valley, I think I’d look at Lafayette College before Lehigh U. Lehigh U.'s specialties have always been engineering and business.

I would say Amherst is “better”. More selective, prestigious, etc. by far. Like katliamom said, it - along with Williams and Swarthmore - is the Ivy Leauge of LACs. I don’t know that much about Amherst beyond that. Lehigh is a respectable school, but not in the same leauge. It’s better known for business and especially engineering. The liberal arts, which I’m assuming you would be in, is a little weaker.

Amherst academics are considered to be fabulous and would be better than Lehigh. Also it didn’t feel that rural to me because it practically adjoins UMass and there are several towns in the area with the other colleges. Why are you making this comparison? If you have the stats for Amherst and could get in, I would take Amherst.
