Competition between high schoolers.

my school is like that. my boyfriend was number 2 in our class by like .02 and im number one. we were both in the magnent program. so that the comp. wouldnt be between us and to be fair, he droped his academy and went to traditional...so now were both number one in our class =D

You two should get married and have babies now.

Yeah well actually, everyone is kinda nice about it..just there's ONE person who keeps saying "I'm gonna beat you." He wants to be number 1 so bad, yet he also wants to go to Harvard Med school. He's cool and funny but whenever the subject of class rank is brought up, he always becomes silent and starts to talk me down with his speech and debate skills. He is gonna take 5 APs and 2 college classes next year just to make it even (I'm taking 4 APs and 2 college classes). I am number 1 right now, he is number 2.

"My rank is N/A? I wonder what that means." :)

There are definitely a couple of kids at my prep boarding school (lol), but they typically are quickly ostracized and all their "friends" backstab them out of sheer annoyance. We're in Cali though, so most of the school is a lot more laid back. We realize that unless we apply to the same school and are extremely similiar, it won't make a difference.

the other day, this annoying kid asked for a copy of my transcript. ***ffffff? like who does he think he is. seriously... and he has the "i'm gonna beat you" thing going on and is so cocky and always brags. augh.

lol, basically the whole top 10 at my school are friends, which we just found out, pretty cool

My school is not competitive at all. For example, the past two years, where the race for valedictorian was close, no one even attempted to challenge themselves to get to the top spot. My class practically surrendered the valedictorian spot to me midway through sophomore year. It's rather unfortunate. I think my class may be slightly more competitve though, since my classmates realize that class rank may be the difference between going to UVA (most of them have this goal) and other state schools.

its natural to be competitive with your classmates. Personally, competition is one of the main motivating factors for me to do well in school...haha

Ha. At my school there is on average 10 valedictorians a year. Seriously. It really doesn't make sense. So if you get one b you end up like 11th in the class. And no one is really competetive with eachother they just try not to ruin their 4.0. Once someone does, they tend to not be half as competetive anymore.

I can relate... my class is extraordinarily competitive. Like... it's bad. If you're in the top 10, you can't even ask anyone for help as they will likely give you wrong advice or wrong answers. Whenever we get tests back everyone is ALWAYS asking what you got and then comparing grades. It gets really annoying.

Yeah I know..most people like that in my school are either Asian or Indian. They are self-centered and get jealous whenever they hear about the achievements of others. I talked to a prominent tutoring guy, who said that competition between students within a high school is stronger than competition between students throughout the nation. Therefore, colleges compare you to all your peers in the same high school. Think about it- most high schools have about the same number of people going to Ivy Leagues every year. There must be some rule for the number of students in a high school going to a certain Ivy League..
