Competition for Study Abroad - Does past experience help

Dear all,

I am planning to apply for a study abroad programme. Just like past few years, there will be very stiff competition and we have to convince the panel of assessors (who will pick very few people due to the limited slots available) on our personal motivation to study abroad.

If I share my past experience of study abroad (when I was much younger, at a different school) and how I have benefited from it (e.g. improve my English), and state that I hope to benefit from this upcoming study abroad programme by improving my French, will it be an advantage or disadvantage?

Advantage of using this point: Shows that I am a tested product, able to benefit from study abroad programme. Personal conviction and testimony that may convince the assessor

Disadvantage of using this point: The assessor may think that I have already been for study abroad in the past, hence the opportunity should be given to someone who has never left his town

Let's discuss. Feel free to comment.
