Competitive nature question (audition wise)

I have heard that typically, more girls audition than guys. Is this a falsehood?

Ok, that was just the opeining question. ha ha

Anyways, wondering how competitive it is to get into ithaca for MT. I know that most musical theater programs are NOT easy to get into by any standard, but I didn’t know if it was as hard as, say, Tisch or Carnegie Mellon (or point park lol.)

Thanks to anybody who has any extra info. I am also wondering about other schools too, but…i guess that’s what the other forums are for :)

Hi Jeremy,

First of all, as it is in the real world so it is in college. There are a lot more girls auditioning than there are guys. It's just the way of the world.

Auditions at all schools for MT are highly competitive. For the most part all of my classmates applied to the schools that you mentioned (CMU, Tisch, Syracuse, etc.) with about a 50% acceptance rate at all of them. So, the real question is what are schools looking for? It really all comes down to who you are as an individual and whether that matches with whatever the school may be looking for at that particular audition date. Things that schools consider (with varying importance given):

The first and most important: Skill set (i.e. dance, acting, singing)
**Schools treat this in different ways. Most schools will look for solid ability in at least two of these areas with great potential in the third. Examples would be: CMU- Strong acting with either strong voice or dance and potential in the third, CCM- Strong dance and voice with potential for Acting, Ithaca- Strong voice and acting with potential for dance. None of these are official program statements, but for the most part these are the skills that accepted students have had.

Voice type
Body type/character type
Personality (BE NICE TO EVERYONE YOU MEET, ESPECIALLY AT AUDITIONS!!!)

There's no official ranking system for Musical Theatre programs, nor should there be in my opinion, because every program has its ups and its downs. I know people that are learning an incredible amount at smaller, younger programs, and I know some kids from schools with great reputations that hate it and transfer. In the end, you have to decide for yourself what school is right for you. Gather the information yourself, visit campuses, observe classes, look at courses offered, talk to students. I guarantee your list will be better for you than someone elses.

dgreenw, did you mean to say that your friends who auditioned for programs such as CMU, Tisch, Ithaca, and so on got into an average of half the schools they applied to? That's amazing. (I am assuming you did not mean to imply that each of those programs had a 50% acceptance rate, right?)

dgreenw2....terrific post!!

NMR...I think dgreenw was commenting about kids in his/her program who had successful admissions outcomes (got into about half of the schools they applied to), given some creedance to the subsequent comments. That's how I read it. Some of the kids I know who got into Ithaca, got into other programs as well (not every program, but some).

thanks soozievt, I spent like 5 minutes trying to figure out how to word that, yes that's what I meant
