What are my chances?

Hi. I am a junior in high school and I would love to major in mt. I am confident singing (a tenor) and acting but my I lack formal dance training. I can easily pick up steps but I have no training.
I have great grades, my current weighted gpa is a 4.4. And unweighted 3.9
I was wondering how my chances of getting in to a program like cmu mt. Thanks

Hi, NickFrost. Most MT programs put the biggest emphasis on the auditions for admissions…even CMU. So, grades don’t matter as much for admissions as they would if you were going into a different field at the same school. Also, if you are a boy (and I assume you are from your name, but I could be wrong), your chances are better. Having said that, improving your dance skills can only help. Since you are still a junior, you have over a year to improve…I would suggest taking dance classes, particularly ballet. Good luck!

Thanks. You said that since I am a guy I have better chances. Do you know how many guys a school like cmu would accept and how many audition on average?

The class of 2012 for CMU is 12 (7 men and 5 women). It is typically around 6 and 6. I don’t know how many auditioned, but a few years ago CMU reported it was over 1,000, and I think I heard the number 1,300 tossed around. But don’t quote me on that. You can always call the school and ask. I do not know how many of the 1,000+ who applied for the program were male versus female, but girls way outnumber boys in this business. Maybe 2/3 girls and 1/3 boys…? Does anyone else know, generally? Regardless, the odds are tough for boys and girls at any auditioned BFA program. And, it is not just talent…many schools are looking for a specific type. So if they have 3 5’10" brown haired tenors, and you are a 5’ 10" brown haired tenor, they may not take you, regardless of how good you are. The best bet is to give yourself as many advantages as possible from the get go. So, if dance is your weak link, then I would take dance.

Nick, by all means audition for CMU, but know that the odds are slim for every single person who auditions – it is a highly selective, highly sough-after program that attracts the most wonderfully talented students from across the country for their auditions. Some are amazing dancers and some are not, some have coaching and some don’t, some are your exact type, others aren’t. If you have a strong audition and you are who they are looking for, you’ll get in. If you have a strong audition and you aren’t who they’re looking or, you won’t. So in addition to CMU, put a good cross section of other MT programs on your list. Break a leg! (FYI: The CMU auditions are very professionally run; you will have a great experience!)

NickFrost – When my D was planning her auditions several years ago she questioned whether she should even audition for CMU given the numbers. My response was, “Someone has to make it, it might as well be you!” She is about to enter her senior year as an MT at CMU. She has loved every minute of her time there. Go for it!
