Competitive Research Programs w/o Prior Experience?

Are there any? Right now I'm under the impression that there are programs like RSI that you need a lot of research experience just to get into, and others for around $5000 that let in almost everyone. Is there any middle ground in this whole thing? Are there any research opportunities for people who just want to get started (you've got to start somewhere, right?)?

Carleton offers something called CSSI that is $2,995 (plus airfare if you don’t live within driving distance, of course). So it is a little less expensive than some of the others. I don’t know if you would call it “competitive”, though - - not sure what that term means, and I honestly don’t know too much about the CSSI program other than what is on Carleton’s website.

Clark Scholars, of course, which offers a nice stipend and is fairly competitive (acceptance rate around 9%). It’s really fun and offers a great research experience. See the Clark Scholars thread on CC if you haven’t already. Applicants without prior research experience are frequently accepted (usually at least a few each year out of twelve), but it’s important you show enthusiasm for research, and obviously, research experience is helpful.
