I'm from a small town outside of Portland, Oregon and have never heard of UR until this year. But I looked through the school website and it seemed like a perfect fit! Does anyone know how competitive it is?

College board said 45% are admitted,

BUT

is that due to the fact that most applicants are highly motivated students???

I am personally from the west coast, so I know that a lot of people out there don't know a bunch about the U of R. Yes, most of the applicants are pretty motivated and well rounded, but it's not impossible to get in. As many private universities, Rochester really looks at whether or not you INTERVIEW, your level of interest (visiting, contacting the university with questions, etc.), your extracurriculars, and your essays/ personal responses on your application.
I didn't have rediculously amazing grades, but I had lots of other achievements, took solid classes, and put out a good interview -- the combination of those things got me in and even got me a fairly good merit scholarship.
What are your credentails?

def. competitive. And they are keeping class years at the same amount each year. so will be more selective as the years go by.

but they are pretty good at letting ppl in even if ur not the whole "4.5 GPA, 2400 SAT" (pretty overrated is my view, who gets 4.5 GPAs? I have a friend who works at the Application committee, and the stories she tells me about HS's inflating the GPA is pretty crazy)

Not too competitive. I got in with a pretty low gpa (3.9 weighted)... low to decent sat1s (2050)... and not many extracurriculars. I didn't even have an interview.

dbear, the admissions rep mentioned that they send the letters out in waves. I don't think it's necessarily a matter of preference? I got my acceptance, and my last name begins with S. So unless it's reverse alphabetism, that wouldn't correlate with the letters. Perhaps it's by the time that they recieved your application? I submitted mine fairly early.
