Competitiveness at Texas State BFA

How competitive is the Audition process for BFA MT? What do the judges look for in a candidate?

Texas State is extremely difficult to get into now. Although the program is new, the buzz about this school is rediculous. Many theatre professionals in NYC told me to choose this over any other school. I got top 25 then rejected. The do look to cast their shows which is kind of annoying. I found out they only wanted two of my type, so the competitiveness was so hard. So it depends. But the program is amazing.

One of the most competitive auditions. Prescreen required. At the callbacks on campus, every candidate we saw was superb. (And you do see them perform, because there is an evening masterclass where some of the prospectives are invited to sing.) It is an EXCELLENT program and I’d encourage anyone interested to apply even thought the odds are tough. Admitted students to MT are given scholarships that effectively reduce tuition to “in-state” rates; so definitely worth trying.

One “add-on” – because the final auditions are held on campus, the one tough thing is that you will fall in love with the program. Be very honest with yourself or your S/D about the odds, because many super talented kids receive the heartbreaking news they’re not admitted.

The program is extremely competitive:

Texas is a large state that is generally under-served in terms of MT BFA programs. Hence, Texas State draws tons of in-state applicants. There are several well-regarded PA HS’s in the state not to mention lots of great comprehensive high school, private school, and youth theatre programs in Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, etc. So there is a large, very talented in-state pool competing for slots. There are no competing programs at any of the large state schools (UT, UH, A&M, etc.). The excellent theatre program at SMU does not feature MT.

Kaitlin Hopkins and crew have done a great job raising the profile of the program, so they now attract lots of attention from the national talent pool.

One of , if not THE, cheapest MT BFA program(s) in the country.

New performing arts center under construction, and the campus location in San Marcos is very attractive.
