Having been admitted as a sophomore transfer, I would like to complete a double major in both 'film studies' and 'economics' (Eh, the business of the business). I've had the equivalent of 10 courses credited (including 3 economics courses), but still have to go through almost all of the core.

Is it possible to accomplish this in 3 years? They seem pretty adamant about not extending your stay...and at that price I sort of agree with them.

simple answer... no

You mean 3 more years? It's probably do-able if you overload and schedule things right. You can count up the number of courses you'd need for each major plus the core, and that'll give you an idea of how much work it will take. If you take 6 classes a semester, that's 36 classes.

One of my friends did a dual degree in electrical engineering and economics in 3 years, but he did it at U Mich at Ann Arbor...he didn't come home for 3 years because he was taking summer classes etc....i don't know if that's possible at Columbia, but apparently a double major is possible in few other colleges

Not sure why you felt compelled to opine here... You missed the purpose of the question (whether a transfer would be able do a double major in 3 MORE years) and have no applicable factual knowledge (that a double major is possible at Columbia, and many do it).

Lionheaded, did you already receive credit and course valuations from Columbia?

Yup, it came with the Fed-exed package. It's pretty much what I expected. A bit less maybe. I have to get them the course outline of one of my seminars which I think will count as computer science--And hopefully a science requirement-- and I can petition for my 'Business statistics' to count as another science elective (Though I have no idea how). The less science the better. :D

Thanks C2002! I'm going to try to get an advisor as soon as I can. Maybe talk to him/her over the phone before making my schedule- though my 1st semester is pretty generic since I have to get through quite a bit of the core.

it's possible, since i was told by adcom that someone had graduated with a triple major in 3 years fairly recently. whether that included summer courses i'm unsure of, but consistently exceeding the credit limit makes this very doable.

there's a difference between do-able and practical
yes graduating with a triple major in 3 years is "possible" but 99 out of 100 students wouldn't able to do that without either getting a low GPA or not having any life outside the library

there is one person this year who graduated early in 3 years with a masters degree... of course these things are possible but whether or not you are capable of doing it is another story

completing a double major in 3 years is going to be very difficult and nearly impossible without summer classes. there is going to be virtually no room for any fun classes and basically you're going to be studying 24/7

Well my second major (film studies) would theoretically be my load of "fun classes". It's something I'm very interested in and while I'm sure it's hard work, it's not economics and statistics. I don't think it would be that much more studying since I wouldn't necessarily be taking more courses during the semester. Just focused more ones instead of random electives.

But your advice makes a lot of sense too. Do you know if its possible to get an adviser before the year starts? For phone calls/emails, etc..
