Completing ALL prereqs before transferring?

I have one more year until I transfer (fall 2013); I've only got 2 GE classes left before I complete IGETC. I'm TAGging to UCD for Man. Econ, but I'm going to apply to the majority of UCs for their business and bus. econ majors. I've already finished Calc 1, 2, Econ 1, 2, and Stats, which is required for most if not all of these schools. However I notice series of computer programming classes and accounting classes as well--- each school has something a bit different. I am planning to finish all the prereqs required for UCD however, since I am writing a TAG with them. Do I HAVE to finish ALL prerequisites prior to transferring for EVERY single UC campus I'm applying to?

No, but you’ll be less competitive than the people who have them finished.

It significantly decreases your chances if you don’t. And some majors may have required classes that you must complete in order to be evaluated for admission.

What is your GPA, and to what other schools are you applying to?

The more you have, the better your chances, and the less you’ll have to complete when you get there. It sounds like you’ve already got this mostly figured out, do everything that multiple schools want and finish all the pre-reqs for your first choice. Just remember everyone else’ll be doing the same thing, it’s pretty difficult to do all the pre-reqs for every school. :P

My GPA as of now is 3.56…it’s liable to change in the next year, and I’m hoping changing for the better, LOL. I am set on Davis, but the schools I’m interested in are UCB (B doesn’t require any computer programming or accounting though), UCSC, and UCI. failure622’s last sentence exactly describes the problem I’m having—it’ll be hard to finish everything that all these schools want. I’ve already finished what seems to be common among every one of them though, namely the econ and math classes. Since I’m going to plan on finishing the series on accounting, that’s another common prereq knocked out. That leaves me with the computer programming series, which I’m not 100% I’ll be able to complete for ALL schools.

Ok, so what classes are you required to take for UCI that you haven’t already? And so you are not going to apply to UCSB, right?

Probably not. For UCI the two prereqs left are two computer programming classes—they’re completely different from UCD’s computer classes. For UCSC I need business AND multivariable calculus…along with another computer course that differs from both UCD and UCI.

Are you applying to Business Administration for UCI?

Nope, I was looking at Business Economics for UCI. For business admin it’s like UCB, I’ve finished (or going to) everything. I prefer business economics over business admin. I had to pick business admin for UCB since they only have that.

Ok, I wouldn’t worry about the computer science class for UCSC, you will likely be accepted anyway with your GPA. If you can fit those 2 classes in for Irvine and Davis, I would do it only if it doesn’t mess with your schedule and if you won’t be overloaded. If not, it’s really up to you. If Davis is your far and away number one choice and you know that won’t change if you get accepted to UCI, then I would just take it to get it out of the way.

Wait a minute…I just want to clarify—I don’t have to finish these classes by the time I apply right, which is November this fall? But I have to finish before Fall 2013, right? Just how risky is it if I can’t squeeze in these extra calculus and computer programming classes? I know for a fact I’m finishing everything for UCD.

You have to have them completed by the ends of Spring 2013 (Summer 2013 doesn’t count). I wouldn’t worry about UCSC, I’m sure you’ll be accepted. With presumably guaranteed admission to Davis, I would just see if you can fit that class in for Irvine. There’s only 1 you need for it, right?

Not doubting you or anything, but is UCSC an easy school to get into? Why don’t I have to worry about it, LOL? Anyway I just rechecked, and for UCI I also need multivariable calc and linear algebra, -_-. I can try to fit them in, if I absolutely have to. I guess I’ll find out whether or not I have to take these stupid classes once November comes.

UCSC is a relatively easy school do get into. You only need a 3.0 to TAG there and even students with below a 3.0 GPA get in. That said, it’s a good school.

I’m not seeing any multivariable calc and linear algebra math requirements for UCI’s BE major. Are you sure you’re not maybe looking at a different major or school?

I’m definitely looking at UCI’s Business Economics. Here, I’ll copy and paste:
MATH 2A & Single-Variable Calculus (4)|MATH 1A & Calculus (5)

MATH 2B Single-Variable Calculus (4)|MATH 1B Calculus (5)

MATH 4 Mathematics for Economists (4)|MATH 1C & Calculus (5)
|MATH 1D & Calculus (5)
|MATH 2B Linear Algebra (5)
I think that math1c and 1d is multivariable calc.

Wow. That’s interesting. For my CC, “MATH 4 Mathematics for Economists” is not articulated as anything, so I’m guessing that there’s still a good chance you’ll be accepted without them, but they will obviously see that you could have taken those classes.

TAG will guarantee you UCD though, so it’s up to you if you want to take all of those classes for UCI. So you could look into UCSB if you want to have another choice without taking them, or you could just focus on Davis.

LOL, if my TAG is approved for UCD, I definitely won’t worry about completing the prereqs for the other schools. Really, for your CC? Lucky for you then, I go to De Anza. But if it isn’t articulated at your CC, it really shouldn’t be as crucial as the other classes. But honestly thanks LAforlife, your input really helped me out!

No problem. Good luck, and I’m sure your TAG will be approved UCD. :)
