Do ALL prerequisites need to be completed before transfer???

Hi everyone. I'm working on transferring to USC, UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCB, and UCR as a Business Economics or Economics major.

My question is this: Do ALL major prerequisites need to be completed to even be admitted into the universities? For example, let's say I've completed all of my prerequisites except for Calculus and I've completed IGETC (or the USC GE requirements) and decide to apply to all these schools. Can I be admitted and just take Calculus at the university or would I have to complete Calculus first so they admit me?

Thanks so much! Help would be greatly appreciated.

For UCLA and UCB the major is impacted, so yes you need to finish all prereqs prior to transfer.

You do not have to finish the pre-req’s to transfer, however!, you should do as much as you can. If anything I would place pre-req’s before Igetc. Although in your case since you are doing a social science, you should be able to finish both in two years.

I have brought this up because I took a placement test and placed into Elementary Algebra and it would take me soooo long to complete all the math I need. Right now it’s looking that within two years I will have Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Stats (for UCSB) completed. Maybe some accounting courses too. So I would technically be able to apply to a UC school (maybe not UCLA or UCB) and USC even if I don’t get all the way up to Calculus I and Calculus II??? So if I’m admitted I’d have to complete the requirements at the university before I’m considered a Business Economics or Economics major?

pick another major if you dont like math.

Anyone else want to chime in? Please? =]

They can admit you even if you didn’t complete are your pre-requisites. You would have to take them at the university (or in some cases, during summer at a CC).

Rwasko-I love math. I got A’s in all my math classes in high school. I had just been out of school for a few years so it was difficult to recall everything. I think placement tests are a poor way to analyze a student’s math ability, anyway.

I believe if the school admits by major, then you’re considered Business Economics or Economics major unless they specifically state otherwise.

You won’t get into Berkeley or UCLA if you don’t get up to calculus.

Ok. So I won’t get into UCB or UCLA if Calculus isn’t completed prior to transfer, but all other universities I listed are within reach with a 4.0 GPA which is what I have now?

Whoever said Pre-Req’s before IGETC is mentally disabled. They won’t accept you without IGETC, you need your general eds done. Look just do Pre-reqs and GEs and dont be a little *****. Alright?

go to summer school! do everything you can to catch up, if not stick around for another year

SimonPhase is an idiot. For impacted, and competitive majors, most of the UCs require the Pre-reqs to be completed. The schools only recommend having as much of the IGETC done as possible.

Actually UChopeful2010, SimonPhase is correct. For almost all non-engineering or science majors, IGETC is a bare minimum requirement. For most majors, if you don’t have it completed your application will not even be considered. Pre-reqs mean zilch without general ed.

As for the OP: try to finish two semesters of calculus. You’ll definitely want to take it at a CC rather than a university because it will be much easier. Also, not having calc on your UC application will severely hurt your chances for admission. Think about it this way: almost all applicants to your major will have two semesters of calc completed. Why should you be admitted and not them?

Ok…brush up on your math skills…if you think you have what it takes to test higher…go to a community college close to you that is not the one that you are currently attending…and retake the assesment test. Do your math units at that community college or online. Skip the low math classes and try to test higher at another school. This will work…my counselor suggested it to me. Tried and tested.

[University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/transfer/tr_adm_reqs.html)

So while IGETC isn’t technically a requirement, it’s an equivalent to a requirement that most students choose to do.

“So while IGETC isn’t technically a requirement, it’s an equivalent to a requirement that most students choose to do.”

Well put.

Everyone who applied last year to UCLA econ without finishing the calc prereq got rejected even if they had a 4.0.

so finish all your pre-reqs!
