So, I took classes at LAVC during high school before I attended SMC. I took Economics 1 and Journalism 105.

I don't see Journalism 105 in the SMC IGETC under Social and Behavioral Sciences, but it's under Social and Behavioral Sciences for the Valley College IGETC. If I transfer those units to SMC or whatever, will they fulfill one course under Social and Behavior Sciences? If not, then I think I'm ****ed...

A counciler told me before that it would work, which is why I went along thinking that all is fine(I still think it's true?). But, some lady in the counciling office just told me it won't work, but they both spoke very vaguely.

This doesn't make any ing sense... if SMC didn't honor it, couldn't I just transfer all of my SMC courses to Valley College and get the IGETC there? Nevermind... I took Japanese at SMC and it's not offered at Valley College hence not in their IGETC... *?

uh…you can take classes at more than one college and still fulfill igetc. i did the same all i have to do is get a official transcript from the other college i attended that fulfilled a igetc req and give it to the college that i attend. also when you submit transcripts after you get accepted from wherever you go you have to submit transcripts from all the colleges you attended. i hope that answers ur questions.

IGETC certification is done by your CC. If SMC is your main CC then you need to follow their IGETC so you might be screwed. I’m not sure if LAVC can process your IGETC, they might need a minimum number of units completed at their school…but definitely look into it!

You should double check with SMC, try sending an email here OnlineCounselor@smc.edu

The above makes no *ing sense. What if I took Japanese 1 and 2 at SMC and the rest of my classes at LAVC. Japanese is the only language not offered at Valley College for some odd reason, so it’s not in their IGETC, but it’s in SMCs IGETC where I took the courses, hence it should count when I submit my application for an IGETC. So, a kid who must attend LAVC, but wants to take a Japanese course has to also take Hebrew or some * just to fill the IGETC? I think not.

2. A course taken at a California Community College is applied to the subject area in which it is listed by the institution where the
work was completed (check [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) for college IGETC lists).

is applied to the subject area in which it is listed by the institution where the
work was completed

The UC application says…

Certified for completion of the Intersegmental General Transfer Curriculum (IGETC): Yes

Valley College
JOURNAL 105 Mass Communication

SMC’s version?
COMM 1, Survey of Mass Media Communications 3 units

Note I say the following as someone who has gone through a process that is similar to yours (but I didn’t have anyone telling me it wasn’t possible).

Let’s say there is Campus A and Campus B. The requirement to be fulfilled is X and the class is Y.

You took Y at Campus B. Campus B’s IGETC says that Y satisfies X. Campus A’s IGETC has a similar course to Y, but it does not satisfy X. However, because Campus B’s IGETC says their Y satisfies X, then Campus A must also recognize it.

This is also true if in later years a course is removed from IGETC. As long as it was taken during the years it was on IGETC, it still qualifies for meeting the requirements of IGETC.

You’re fine. As long as that course you took met the requirement during the time you took it (and you can look up old IGETCs for each CCC), then you’re set. If SMC gives you grief, take it higher because obviously the person you’re talking to does not know how the system works.

It’s not a matter of the course transferring to SMC, but that it will meet IGETC certification no matter what fuss anyone raises at SMC.

I talked to a counselor today and my original methodology was correct. Keep dumb staff out of the counselor’s building!

Ummm… so I thought the IGETC was something totally different(I thought it was a paper certificate that I would apply for once which proved that I completed it, but I apparently have to send applications to individual schools). I applied to UC: Los Angeles, Berkeley, Davis, San Diego and Santa Barbara; when do I submit the IGETC applications? I heard Berkeley might want it now while the others would want it after I get accepted(do they want it right after I get accepted while I’m visiting to see if I want to attend or after I accept the admittance)? Does anybody know which UCs want it now(if any)?

The form IGETC certification takes can probably vary from CCC to CCC, but mine was an actual paper document. I had to apply for it to be sent to my chosen UC and I also chose to have a duplicate sent to my residence so I had a copy for my records. You don’t send the IGETC applications to the UCs. You send the request for certification to your CCC and you tell them which UC to send the certification to.

As for when, you send the IGETC certification when it’s asked for which is generally when transcripts are requested. The UCs can already see that you’ve taken courses that satisfy IGETC. Do not send unsolicited material to any of the UCs.

Appears to be from an older catalog, but gives you an idea:

Right, my thinking exactly, however I saw somewhere on the SMC sight that they require you to take at least 50% of your classes on the physical campus for completion of an A.A. I don’t know if this is also true for IGETC, after all I don’t want to waste time and money for nothing. I guess I should consult with a counselor, I don’t know.

I fulfilled every single one of my easy IGETC requirements online. By easy, I mean the Gen Ed Intro-to-whatever stuff. I did Intro Phil, Soc I, Music Theory I, Microecon, English I/II, American History, French II, Programming Logic, and Anthro online. I don’t think it makes a difference with IGETC, and there’s no indication that they were online classes on my transcripts.

Hmm, thanks sounds good. Did you select classes on your own, just by using info from assist, or get help from an adviser to make sure you were choosing the right coursework? Any recommendations? Thanks for the reply, by the way, I’ll definitely get started on some of the basics as soon as possible.

I just check assist to see what fulfilled requirements for different IGETC areas and then picked the courses that interested me the most. I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to a counselor, lol - other than to get some math requirements waived.
