computer for CAS

is laptop a necessacity? i mean, do people from arts and science actually carry their laptops to class to take notes/do labs and other stuff?
becuase i really would like to use my own desktop instead of buying a new more expensive but crappier laptop

bumppppppppppp 1

most freshmen don't carry laptops to classes. The only place that I've even seen that would be on the engineering quad. However, if you want to do work int eh library, you might want to bring a laptop.

A laptop is very useful. I'm a desktop guy but I'm getting a laptop this christmas break because it makes it easier to study and hang out in the lounge with friends and do work.

but would my life be really inconvienient without a laptop but just a desktop in my dorm instead?

I was really curious for this as well. I myself am so far planning on being a physics major if that makes a difference. Would it really be inconvenient to have a desktop? I, like Hansen, prefer desktops.

I've had a desktop for two years, no problems here. But....I also have had singles for two years, and almost never go the a library or anywhere else to study. Additionally, some of the guys I study with are in my suite, so I never really have to go very far.

I do a lot of 2D graphical work, so the power of the desktop was necessary. Most people do prefer to have a laptop though, because you can take them to the library to study, and you can take them home with you on breaks.

If you plan on getting two computers, which is a nice luxury but certainly isn't necessary, go for an ultraportable such as a Sony Vaio TX, Dell Lattitude D420, Lenovo X60, etc.

In sum, what kind of PC you need depends on whether you plan on taking it places or not. But, either choice will be fine.

If you have a desktop already, I'd recommend bringing that, and trying it out for a few weeks. If you feel you need a laptop, then go buy one, it's easy. No need to spend the money now and then regret it. I know plenty of people whose laptops never leave their rooms.

singles? dorms? you can get singles dorm????????

There are singles in each dorm. There isn't a dorm of just singles if that's what you're trying to ask. I don't know how many singles there are, but I would say a good majority of people are in doubles while most of the singles are in Balch.

I know Dickson has quite a few singles, 1/3 rooms in Mews is a single. It doesn't seem like Donlon has that many singles, some of the townhouse rooms are singles. Balch has a lot, and the rooms are huge. And the high rises and low rises have a few.

what do you mean singles in each dorm? like you get your own room/bathroom and stuff? so no roommate or something?

ahaha, no. You will always share a bathroom. The best you can get is a shared sink if you're a girl in blach or a suite or 5 people sharing a bathroom if you're in mews or KBC. Townhouses I think have multiple bathrooms, although I'm not exactly sure. The big forms all have community bathroom.s

dam i hate community bathrooms
